Meet Janelle Guy of Standing Ovations in Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Guy.

Janelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing wedding officiating on kind of a fluke. One of my best friends was getting married and I was helping her plan her wedding. We had found a wedding officiant for her, but at the very last minute, he had to drop. He had made the suggestion to her that I could do it, I would just need to be ordained. So, I went online, received my ordination, and here I am. I have done at least seven weddings since. I also do some planning and wedding coordination.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been pretty easy. I mean, it can be super slow at times. Some people who reach out are looking for someone who is bilingual, which I am not. Also, I had a busy month, where I officiated four weddings, and then the next month nothing. It comes with the business though.

Standing Ovations – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Standing Ovations specializes in small weddings and elopements. We also provide day of coordination and some wedding planning. I am known for having a low rate but provide amazing customer service. I am the top Three P’s: prompt, precise, and professional. I am proud of my company because even though this is something that just fell into my lap, I’ve been able to be successful with it. I feel what sets me apart from everyone else is that you don’t see too many African American women officiants nowadays, especially not in this area. Also, I don’t think when people officially meet me, they don’t expect how I look: tattoos, long nails, nose ring, etc. Another thing is that I like to meet with the couples in a casual setting to talk about the wedding and to get them comfortable with me.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is just feeling accomplished with yourself. If you wake up and go do your absolute best and create results, then you have been successful. I feel as if doing what brings you the most joy is being successful. It doesn’t mean having a lot of money or material things. Just having that sense of accomplishment and you saw a goal to the end is being successful to me.
