Life and Work with Emily Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Jones.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Plainview. Went to college at Texas Tech. Started in TV as a news reporter (hated it) in Lubbock, but made the move to sports after a couple of years (thank goodness). After six years working at the NBC affiliate in Lubbock, I made the move to Fox Sports Southwest in 2004, where I worked for nine years, covering a myriad of sports, including the Rangers. I left Fox in 2013 to work exclusively for the team.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, but I’ve learned something from every bump along the way and am grateful for what each one has taught me. Early on in my career, the biggest challenge was dealing with the criticism of having a job in the public eye. Now 20 years in, I’m used to it. The hardest thing now is juggling work and family. That struggle is real. For women going into television, I would advise to thicken up that skin real quick.

Please tell us about Texas Rangers.
As the field reporter for the Texas Rangers, and my hope is to show our viewers a different side of our players than what they see on the field.

I’m most proud of being able to adapt as my career has progressed in a way that makes me a valuable asset to our organization beyond just the television aspect.

My role is not exactly traditional within the organizational structure within MLB or professional sports. But it works for us.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Yes. Men listening. Women believing.
