Today we’d like to introduce you to Chenique Mccall.
Chenique, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Let me start by saying this, “God” is how I got where I am today along with the help and guidance from my mother. Most importantly, my strength, determination and willingness to want better for myself played a role as well. I am originally from Miami, Florida. Once I graduated high school, I knew that pursuing my own hair business and providing exceptional customer service and the top-quality product was my main goal in life. My mom gave me the idea of naming my business after myself, which made it extremely unique to me because of my name. After gaining a scholarship in Athletics for Track and Field, I moved to Lorman, Mississippi where I attended Alcorn State University. After four years there, I graduated with my bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2016. A month after graduating, I realized I wasn’t where I needed to be in the life I visioned for myself.
I moved back to Miami, FL and started working two jobs, with no transportation, taking the city bus back and forth. With the much-appreciated assistance from my dad and my hard work, I was able to purchase my first car. I didn’t understand life at that point, but I knew I didn’t come this far to give up. I moved back to Mississippi that following month where I later got my master’s degree in Business and Hospitality making me the first person to complete my degree faster than what was expected. Fast forward I obtained a job and relocated to Alabama where I was a branch manager for a financial institution. Unfortunately, during my time there I was a victim of racial discrimination and unfair treatment. I ended up leaving that position and moving to Dallas, TX (DFW area). I ran across some really bad times here and at that point, I felt the only way to go was up from this point on. I experienced some events that I couldn’t have even imagined myself going through. I was hurt by friends and family, seeing people for their true colors. I became motivated and I used that motivation and determination to get my new small business up and running. While selling my “Cheniquez” bundles, and running my online site, I decided to recontinue hair styling and incorporate it into my business. Cheniquez has started great and I plan to keep it that way.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business especially a small business, the road is not always a smooth ride which is something a lot of people don’t realize. If it comes easy you shouldn’t want it, you want to work hard for all that you put your mind to. I realized that there are ways to make things better. The biggest struggle is always the financials of the business because you must make sure you are not spending more money than you are making. Another struggle with being a hairstylist and having an online business is being aware of the scamming that is going on and how you should handle things like that. I make wigs as well, so a lot of my products get shipped either out of state or locally which requires more fees to pay attention too. Everyone will not like your product. Everyone will not be able to afford your products or services and sometimes it can make you feel like you are wrong for not making changes to satisfy them. The hair industry is very competitive, and it can make you feel like you are behind. I am here to tell you that I was right on time and nothing could stop me because my small business means a lot to me. I don’t have the finical support I would like to have but it’s nothing like getting things on your own it feels so much different.
Please tell us about Cheniquez – what should we know?
Cheniquez provides unprocessed, processed extensions, hair essentials, lashes, customized hair bonnets, and wraps. I make custom wigs based upon purchase. I customized the units to fit the customer’s request or better and we ship the products worldwide, I am also a hairstylist so I incorporate my services to my clients who either purchase hair from me at a discounted price or bring their own hair so that I could install a hairstyle to the clients liking. I specialize in Wig construction, coloring jobs, sew-ins, box braids, blunt-cut bobs, layering, etc.
The thing I can say that I am most proud of as a business is growth, when I started in December 2018, I made one sale and that was from my best friend Lucy she made her first purchase. I constructed a wig for her and created a custom color for the wig construction, since that day things were not easy but just to see one person believe and support me allowed others to put their trust and believe in me and the service that I provide. Over time I started to see baby steps. Consistency!
I know other businesswomen and men are out here in Dallas doing the same thing as me but I’m certain my delivery, consistency, determination, and customer service automatically sets me aside from others and what they do. The motto I have for my business is “Uniquely made for bosses” everyone is a boss in their way you just have to figure out what drives the boss out of YOU!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I work well with others even under pressure, great communication skills, well organized, great team player, blessed, I can uplift others. I am humble and outspoken, and most importantly a BOSS! If you mix all of those into one jar, you will have the perfect recipe for success.
