Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Blitzer.
Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My fascination with film grew in high school. Initially, I was interested in technology in general, but it quickly developed into a love of storytelling through the medium of film and video. I decided I wanted to attend film school and ended up completing my education at SMU in Dallas. I managed to earn a dual-bachelors in Film and Advertising and a Master’s in film in just four short years.
Since then, I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to enter the freelance commercial industry in DFW. I’ve worked on commercials for many major brands and have recently stepped up to Production Coordinator. I’m blessed to work with many amazing people and to further my passion for short-form storytelling. I also started a business, HiRai Creative. I produce commercial, film, and corporate work in DFW direct to agency and direct to client.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle I faced was abandoning the idea of obtaining a full-time job and moving into full-time freelance work. It’s certainly nerve-racking trying to figure out if you will get enough work to pay the bills, but it’s almost a necessary step in working in our industry. Thankfully, I was able to overcome this challenge by teaching at the Art Institute of Dallas – I love passing on the knowledge I’ve learned to hard-working students.
Please tell us about HiRai Creative.
HiRai Creative promotes brand growth through concise, emotive storytelling. We specialize in telling stories in a small amount of time and creating emotional connections with brands and their audiences. We frequently work direct to client, often coming up with creative campaigns directly with decision-makers. In creating high-quality work, we do the prep work needed in order to ensure successful production and create stories that connect audiences to brands.
The company also serves as the Executive Producer of a local web series called XV Anthology. It’s challenging to produce short films because telling stories that resonate with audiences in a short amount of time is challenging. As of December 15th, we will have published a short film every month in 2019, which we consider an amazing accomplishment.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think we are constantly challenging ourselves in the way we work, and frequently “start over” in order to improve our processes and the content itself. If we had to truly start from scratch on everything, I think understanding how the film industry works in Dallas at a basic level would have helped.
