Meet Dorian Clark of Dora’s Amora in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorian Clark.

Dorian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At the ending of 2016, my health started to decline. During this time, I used baking as a way to escape my reality. My husband at the time suggested that I start my own baking business. I thought about it for a couple of days, talked it over with my sister, and then decided to start a home bakery. Once that decision was made, it took 2-3 hours to come up with a business name. Dora was my maternal grandmother’s name, she taught me how to bake at a young age. Amora, of course, means love in Spanish. I wanted a name that I felt represented my family. As of January 2017, Dora’s Amora was officially in business. I started getting orders and slowly started building clientele. Things were moving right along until my health started worsening again! In all, I’ve had three major, life-altering surgeries. Despite my prior health issues, I’ve continued to overcome almost all of my medical ailments. Withstanding and progressing despite my health has given me the strength to continue the growth and development of my cake business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? Ha! I wish. Each time I had surgery, I had to stop baking for extended periods- it was extremely frustrating! My mind and body were literally battling each other on a daily basis. I knew what I wanted to do but physically was unable to. I was constantly receiving calls for orders but had to turn them down due to my health. Heck, it’s hard out here in the world of sweets, competition is intense. It’s imperative to remain relevant and productive in order to maintain and build a steady customer base.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dora’s Amora specializes in customized cakes, cupcakes and other treats. I’m self-taught and I’m able to provide my customers with marvelous cakes that taste delicious. I’m a visual person and have the ability to create what I see. What sets me apart from others is that I like to keep my prices affordable. If there’s something my customer is wanting then I provide options that are within their budget. I feel like everyone should have a custom cake. After all, it makes you feel special; isn’t that what everyone deserves?

What were you like growing up?
I don’t know where I’m from (military brat). According to my birth certificate, I was born on a military base directly on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky. I did spend part of my childhood in Shreveport, LA, however,  I’ve been in Texas since the 5th grade. I like to think of myself as an outgoing and fun person. I may seem quiet, but I’m the complete opposite. I’m caring, extremely creative, and goofy. I like all things DIY and will try to make just about anything.
