Today we’d like to introduce you to Quincy Holloway.
Quincy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
3Billion began in 2007 as a residential solar consultation firm in Fort Worth after I spent four years in the service of our public education system as an art teacher. Wanting to do more for the future of our children and more specifically, a daughter suffering from asthma, I was determined to focus my life’s work on clean air initiatives.
Unfortunately, there was a little thing called the housing crisis just around the corner, that set back caused a pivot to commercial solar applications. Luckily, I was able to connect with Dave Murphy of Texas Eagle Construction, now USA Eagle Carports, where I was mentored in the nuanced world of covered parking. I learned the ins and outs of the commercial parking industry which laid the foundation for future career diversions into Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, EV sales and marketing, and construction project management.
Fast forward to 2018, after a series of fits and starts with 3Billion, a stint in an eco-tech incubator, hundreds of meetings with industry types and at least a dozen iterations of the business plan that we are working now. We’ve acquired a modest amount of capital from a small group of friends and family investors. They helped to develop 2 prototypes of the Solport, solar carport business model, We’re actively seeking seed capital to help us convert above-ground garages and large commercial parking lots to solar power generation, green-roof and rainwater harvesting systems, and an innovative sub-lease model.
We call it Karōshi, and it integrates a host of IoT, MaaS, and connected car systems and devices to our canopies and existing parking garages. Together, this hardware and software platform provides a foundation for the real estate spinoff and sister company of 3Billion; 3Billion Real Estate Services, headed up by my partner, Stephanie Reid.
Has it been a smooth road?
Overall the path has been defined by steady but inevitable advances in the EV market, helped along with a decline in solar equipment costs and hampered somewhat by cheap traditional, (oil and gas), energy markets. We often struggle with relating to investors that may not quite understand why and where we are positioning ourselves in the market.
They may not believe that the market for connected, autonomous vehicles has a direct link to our real estate acquisition strategy and worse, our commercial real estate partners are often slow to see our shared opportunity to cater to these technologies at the parking lot level.
Please tell us about 3Billion Renewable Energy. What should we know?
3Billion Renewables is rooted in a strong foundational belief that the custodial duties we have committed to a meeting are to the benefit of our present and future generations. We understand that we are a small part of a herculean effort to repair our past transgressions against the natural environment. However small, we know that our energy and efforts are vital to setting the table for sustainable transit. Our creed is to facilitate a truly scalable and equitable impact on our economy and in our world.
We leverage innovative financial tools like PACE, and PPA’s to bring large scale solar parking projects to commercial properties with adherence to Win-Win-Win value propositions. We pride ourselves on being versatile and well connected to a multitude of like-minded professionals. Always transparent in our dealings and understanding of the big picture.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Simply put, automated. Advances in autonomous electric single-passenger vehicles, last-mile drone and small cargo logistical vehicles, personal mobility, and shared-ride or Mobility as a Service operations even personal autonomous craft will place new demands on our parking lots.
We see the Solport, Terraport and Soltrellis parking systems, key in infrastructure development for fleet maintenance, charging and staging.
