Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson Lyric.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jayson. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was raised in the Oak Cliff and Pleasent Grove area of Dallas. My parents split when I was one, so I mainly lived with my mom, auntie, two sisters and three cousins in a household of eight. As far as music, I started in the church.
Both of my parents were organist and keyboardist and played for several churches. I always tell people music chose me but my choice of music was rap. My mom used to force me and my siblings to sing in the church choir; whether it be youth choir, mass choir, or male chorus.
They also talked me into playing the drums which I later would come to love.
My mom was also big on songwriting so I naturally picked that up as well.
I remember all my siblings & cousins would tell me to shut up all the time because I would just walk around the house singing random freestyles of songs.
Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” was one of the first songs that really motivated me to pursue rapping.
My mom saw my love for creating songs and bought me my first rhyme book at 12 years old. I’ve been writing ever since.
I didn’t record my first song until I was a senior in Highschool.
I started a rap group called “Money Gang Mafia,” with some neighborhood friends & classmates of mine and we would sell CDs at school. I was 16 at the time. I found a home studio behind my high-school and I would skip school and go record on a consistent basis.
I eventually picked up producing at 18 because I was tired of paying for beats. I got a hold of fruity loops and went straight to YouTube and taught myself everything I needed to know.
At that time, I also started looking into building my own home studio to put in my one-bedroom apartment. Up until 2018, I’ve been recording and mixing my own vocals. I started a music production team in 2010 (NHouse Penthouse) that I’m still building and now I’m able to work with just about any established producer in the DFW area.
I released my first official mixtape in 2010. It was released on Friday the 13th for good luck and I still stick with that format till this day.
I also started a mixtape series called Brick x Brick. I’m currently working on my 4th installment of the series. In addition to the mixtapes, I’ve released three official albums, my latest being Cashmere Don which I’m currently promoting.
My current NHouse producers are Oktober1st, KGray, Bz. I also work heavily with Migi Music, Lonestarr Muzik, Campion and several others from the city of Dallas.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anybody that tells you it has been a smooth road is flat out lying. Just as an artist, finding your own sound takes time. Finding the right team and pieces to place around you takes time. Building the right relationships and networking takes time. Sustaining the capital to fund every move, goal takes time. Then balancing all that with family while taking care of home can be a lot on an up and coming artist. Thats just the surfaces of things. You’re going to be let down a million times and only then will you start to understand the art of not depending on others. Go do it, whatever it is, just do it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
Jayson Lyric and NHPENT are my companies. A true artist, producer, designer, a genuine person, a Dallas icon and a father. I answer to no one but my daughter lol. I’m great at what I do. I sleep, eat, live music. I can’t think about anything else. I believe it’s my purpose to tell my story/ share light on the things that I feel matter the most through music. I pride myself on quality and setting the bar, literally. I believe my work and product speaks for itself. Thats what sets me apart, no gimmicks just great product that doesn’t look, sound, feel like anything or anyone else. I believe that I have a universal appeal. Children, teens, grandparents, hardcore streets cats, women can all enjoy my music/content and relate in some way. This next decade for me is just about expanding, continuing to build my empire and my NHouse umbrella. My biggest goal is to leave a legacy that can set my children’s children up for success.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Like every industry it will evolve. It’s just about being able to adapt. A new wave of artist will come and go. Thats why you offer what no one else can, YOU! No one can imitate you better than you. I believe the people that have longevity, found that uniqueness about themselves and mastered it.
