Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Thomas.
Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I start my story by saying I don’t have a high school diploma but a master’s degree. Life back when I was in high school was consumed by grieving the homicide of my father when I was 11 and my mother’s battle with addiction and mental health instability. People are now shocked to learn of backstory because today looks very different. I am the owner and lead therapist of an award-winning counseling agency and a best-selling author. Since my teen years, I have lost over 120 lbs. Some days I feel like I have become a completely different person over last two decades.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle was rewiring the inner dialogue that whispered life was to be feared. With my background from childhood and teen years, anxiety overtook my life for a long season and well into adulthood. Fear made me debilitated. Learning to calm those inner fear responses has allowed me to live in freedom and a life I never imagined possible.
Please tell us about Southlake Christian Counseling.
Southlake Christian Counseling is a boutique counseling practice and we specialize in providing a safe space for clients to talk about anything and everything going on in their lives. Some people shy away from faith-based counseling because they rightfully are concerned it will be dogmatic and shaming. We strive to be the exact opposite. We know spiritual abuse occurs in the Church and want clients to feel safe to share those experiences and move forward into healing. I specialize in healing from what I call hidden abuse, the types of abuse that do not leave outward visible signs. Psychological, emotional and financial abuse are just a few that I specialize in my practice.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I strongly believe that life unfolds at its own pace and our job to watch and follow where it is leading. I rarely wish for things to be different because I believe we reach goals when we are emotionally and physically ready for them to unfold.
