Meet Justin and Theresa Mason of MIG Real Estate and Justin Mason Entertainment in Grapevine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin and Theresa Mason.

Justin was born and raised in a suburb of Fort Worth, TX. He enlisted in the military upon graduating from high school and served 5 years in the US Navy. After his honorable discharge, he attended the University of North Texas and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He went to work as a police officer for the City of Arlington and obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Texas Arlington in Criminology.

Theresa was born in Atlanta, GA and moved to and grew up in Columbus, OH. She attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Film, Television, and Theater. Not exactly sure what she wanted to do, she moved back to Columbus and went into business with her mother, painting wall murals. 3 months into their partnership, Theresa’s parents decided to move to Florida and at that point, she officially began her career as a serial entrepreneur. She decided to move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, relocating her mural business, Wall 2 Wall Art. From there, she saw an opportunity to start a residential and commercial painting company, W2W Painting. At its peak, the company employed 3 crews, painting interior and exterior homes and businesses throughout the DFW area. Its success inspired her to create a non-profit organization, R.O.L.L. O.N., distributing paint and painting supplies to individuals and community organizations.

Justin and Theresa met in May of 2011, blindly set up by one of Theresa’s painting customers, who was also Justin’s cousin. They were married less than a year later. Following a knee injury and surgery while on duty, Justin took advantage of the down time to obtain his real estate license. With the support of a Broker friend of Theresa’s, they set up an LLC, MIG Real Estate, to enable them to practice real estate on the side. An opportunity with an investor client, however, provided an opening for Justin to leave the police department and pursue real estate full time. Shortly after, Theresa was able to sell her painting company, obtain her real estate license and join Justin in their business full time as well.

They found success in real estate early on, though it was an adjustment for both of them—newly married and working together on a business of their own presented some challenges. Each needed some outside hobbies to pursue. Justin decided to blow the dust off of a guitar he had bought several years prior and finally learn how to play it. He spent free time and late nights teaching himself to play guitar. He picked it up quickly and decided to put a band together. Within 6 months, Justin and Theresa had formed another LLC for this new music company, and Justin had a band. He sang and played rhythm guitar.

He played his first gig in August of 2014 and since then has recorded two studio EPs of original music, played at notable venues such as Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth and Gas Monkey in Dallas. He has played at several fairs and festivals including the San Antonio Rodeo and Grapevine’s Main St. Fest and GrapeFest. He has just released his second single to radio and continues to book shows and play all over the DFW area and State of Texas.

They have also continued to grow their real estate company each year.

Justin recently obtained his Broker’s license, and they have added more agents to their team. And if running a Real Estate company and playing music at night was not enough, they have also added 3 children to their family. John was born in November of 2014, Elizabeth (Ellie) was born 20 months later, and Katherine (Kate) was born 11 months after that.

Initially, Justin struggled with the transition from working at the police department to owning and running his own business. Starting with his time in the military, he had always been told what to do and when to do it, and he was always paid at the same time, the same amount of money. While the flexibility and freedom of owning a business was great, it was certainly an adjustment for him to stay motivated and know what to do each day, planning ahead for times when income was spaced out and cash flow had to be managed. Theresa had always owned her own business so she was used to lumpy income and time management. The biggest adjustment for her was having a business partner… who was also her husband. It took some time for them to get into a groove, define business roles and improve communication.

Another struggle they encountered was having patience as they grew the real estate business and music business, but especially the music business. The music industry is tough to break into and requires a lot of perseverance with booking, marketing and branding…hoping to achieve a breakthrough with larger success and visibility.
