Today we’d like to introduce you to Shardae Perryman.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a fascination with the idea of self-expression and how people all over the world choose to display it. Whether it’s through our clothing and how we choose to place our articles of clothing together, our mannerisms, the personal catch phrases that we create when communicating with our peers or how we choose to wear our hair. With that being said as I went through my Sisterlocks Journey and all it encompassed that being the patience aspect of waiting for my locs to mature and the anticipation that came with it all while learning to embrace each stage of the locking process I was eager to find a way to express the love and pride I had for my locs by creating loc jewelry. Regal Locs Loc Jewelry was created with Sisterlocked / Microloc’d Queens in mind as we often get left out when it comes to loc jewelry. The array of collections available allows us not only to express pride in our locs by adorning them but create personal reminders for ourselves as we embrace our loc journey for all that it is.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Any journey worth voyaging will be a bit bumpy. When I created Regal Locs Loc Jewelry I pulled from the same strand of courage that I did when I decided to embark on this loc journey. While I didn’t find too much push back from the logistics aspect putting the shop itself together, like most people I did go back and forth with self-doubt. Hesitant with the idea of releasing my work to the public I would brainstorm ideas for my shop and then put it away only to revisit the notes a couple of days later. Having something tangible to go back to for those days that self-doubt seemed to take over really helped me grasp the courage to continue forward with the implementation piece of my ideas. Similar to how Regal Locs Loc Jewels can help one through those inevitable days where you’re simply not feeling your locs. Regal Locs offers collections that help you set your intentions. For any creatives out there with an idea or concept that they would like to one day implement, I would encourage you to write your ideas down so that you have something to revisit and build upon after a much needed break.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Regal Locs Loc Jewelry story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m just another creative who dared to share her work with others. Up until recently, I’ve been recognized as Green Thoughts an influencer with Sisterlocks and since my recent big chop and my followers much appreciated acceptance, we’ve been able to get back to the core purpose of my presence on social media and that is self-love, self-care and self-reflection. While I no longer have sisterlocks, I still wear my loc jewelry as it is still a very powerful way to express myself in my appearance. Regal Locs Loc Jewelry is versatile in that you can wear them on locs, braids or twists.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Growing up in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by mostly Hispanic and caucasian young women while trying to maneuver through adolescence was a challenge for me in the respect to my identity and comfort level with my natural features. Learning to truly embrace and love myself has been a continued journey.
I’d first like to state that there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to straighten or maintain a straight hair look but I do have to admit for myself as a child growing up in an environment where most people do not look like you, an environment where the people with straight hair are straightening their hair can of course depending on the child affect your self-esteem and self-image. Going through those motions and coming out on the other side and definitely positioned to encourage others to learn to love themselves through and through
