Today we’d like to introduce you to April Phillips.
April, before we jump into specific questions about your practice, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I will give you a very short version of my story. However, you can read about my life journey in my book, When I Said Yes, which is available on Amazon, Books-A-Million, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and my website, https://iamaprilphillips.com.
Sixteen years ago, I was genuinely hating the way my life was turning out. I felt that I should be further along in life than I was. The more that I tried to change things on my own, the worse things became. Then one day, I was so frustrated, and with tears streaming down my face, I dropped to my knees and surrendered my life to God. I asked God what he wanted me to do. I prayed to Him to direct my steps, and to help me make the right decisions. The next morning, I woke up refreshed and had inner peace. I applied to nursing school, and from that moment on, my life has never been the same.
After graduating from nursing school in 2011, I worked as a cardiopulmonary nurse in a hospital for a year, and then I became a travel nurse for three years. I traveled across the country to work in various hospitals, gaining work, cultural, and life experiences. It was during this time, 2013, that I decided to go back to graduate school and obtain my Master of Science in Nursing degree, specializing as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.
In 2016, I graduated with honors and moved to Arlington, Texas to practice. The following year, I wrote and published my first book, When I Said Yes, which was ranked first place in both Self-help and Inspirational categories at the Miami International Book Festival in 2019. In the same year, I began my consulting business, When I Said Yes, and began writing a blog focusing on various types of personal injuries. My life has turned 180 degrees, and it keeps getting better and better, and I give all the glory to God!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has never been smooth, but that’s life. If we don’t ever encounter a few bumps along the way, we never grow, and life continues to be stagnant. Life is meant to be like a roller coaster. It’s full of highs and lows, a few jerks here and there, moments when you’re scared and your heart sinks into your stomach, with twists, and turns. Who has ever ridden on a straight roller coaster? No one! I believe that ride would be extremely boring, and a complete bust for the amusement parks.
I’ve had many struggles along the way, but my most significant struggle was financial. In 2010, right after the housing market crash of 2008, I was starting my first semester of nursing school and working a full-time job. After making a “C” on my first exam, I had to make a decision to keep making “Cs” and risk the possibility of being kicked out of nursing school or quit my full-time job. I refused to go backward; therefore, I quit my job!
Please tell us about your practice.
I’m an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Transformational Life Consultant. I have a desire to help others change their lives and live with purpose as their transformational life consultant. Because of my life experiences, I’m known for being able to relate and establish rapport with my patients/clients to provide quality care and service. It is through my care for others that I am able to use my gifts and talents to serve God.
When I Said Yes, it is a business that is committed to helping people discover their purpose, overcome their setbacks and discouragements, provide support, insight, help create a plan of action to help people unlock the unlimited power that they have within themselves so they can live with meaning. As the founder, I desire to create a community where we can all come together to meet, support, encourage, and share our success stories. As I started helping clients this past year, I learned that everyone is going through something, and many people are dealing with the same circumstances. I want everyone to know that you are not alone.
What I’m most proud of about When I Said Yes is that not only is it a business built from overcomers and winners, but we also have a passion and desire to help others. St. Catherine of Siena once said, “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.” I believe that this is what sets us apart from others. If we conquered our obstacles, then you can do it too! Let us help you learn how to win! What do you want for yourself? How do you want your life to be ten years from now? This year, 2020, is the first step to reaching your destiny! You can reinvent your life. It’s possible! It won’t be easy, but it is possible! If other people have made their dreams a reality, then it’s possible for you too! You must fight for your dreams!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I credit my success to God, my family, my team, and my friends.
