Meet Shanteé Mims of Smims Mixology in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanteé Mims.

Shanteé, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey began when my employer of five years (A Mortgage firm) went through an acquisition. Naturally, I struggled with the resulting changes, and I quickly realized that I was overall unhappy. I knew that I didn’t want my life to be controlled by my employer. I was over the long commutes, limited time off, and solemn Sunday’s. With intense meditation and with the support of like-minded Coworkers I abruptly quit my 9-5 to explore bartending.

Bartending was a no-brainer for me because schooling wasn’t required and cash was readily at hand. I walked a straight line with my career path up until this point (Before entering the mortgage industry I worked retail management for seven years), so I decided to attend bartending school because it gave me justification for walking out on a successful career. 32 hours and $600 later, I was a certified bartender with 32 hours of experience lol. Anxiety gave me confidence that I never recognized within myself. I was told that most bartenders have to start off as servers or bar-backs, but I wanted to cut to the chase. The day that I passed my exit exam, I was given a list of job postings so I decided to apply at a few locations in person that were along my route home. To my surprise, I ended up with two job offers as a bartender on that very day! I was thrilled and nervous at the same time. Once on the job(s) I developed a passion for mixology, style, and technique. Google and YouTube was a great pastime back then, and before I knew it I found myself freelancing which eventually led to the birth of Smims Mixology.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road. Not everyone was fond of me choosing to be “the help” since I have a college degree. In addition, I started the business much sooner than I was prepared to. I was so anxious to dive in that I skipped over some general research and planning. I learned from that mistake but I have no regrets. I did what was necessary to set myself in motion versus planning without execution as I’ve done many times before.

I found it difficult to align Smims Mixology with TABC regulations as they were primarily geared towards businesses with brick and mortar locations and/or businesses that offer catering services. To be forward, there aren’t regulations specifically for mobile bartending services in the state of TX. Because of this, I continuously research and stay in close communication with TABC officials. This allows us to operate with confidence.

Smims Mixology – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Smims Mixology was inspired by the concept of freelancing in the beverage industry. We primarily offer mobile bartending services for pop-up events. In addition our services include but aren’t limited to sponsoring events, bartending classes, consulting, and staffing throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

We aren’t the waitstaff dressed in all black going unnoticed. We’re Conversationists, Educators, Performers, Chaperones, Life Coaches…etc. Amongst these characteristics we prioritize expressing ourselves as individuals for the love of mixology.

We’re equipped with ideas and prepared to execute the vision of others. Our expertise allows us to simplify or elevate recipes and concepts according to the needs of each individual client.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a reflection of my own ambitions. It’s simple: If I desire something then it’s possible. Likewise, I understand that change is also within reach. Dreams aren’t necessarily limited to the reality of life, therefore I evaluate my ultimate desires more than what appears realistic. In conjunction, I like to research and decide on what I’m truly willing to endure. Self-awareness is key here. I also focus on what’s immediately attainable. The “glass half full” goes without saying. Planning and execution keep the light at the end of the tunnel for me personally. With this mindset, I’ve developed understanding in my strengths, weaknesses, and overall interests in general. Most importantly I’ve learned that my success is ever-changing and without parameters. Choosing to walk away is definitely an option because I’m my own judge. If I continue dreaming there will be no limit to my success.
