Meet Dorion Gipson of DJ Sir Gene in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorion Gipson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Djing at the age of 12, it all started in 1997 when I tried to mix my first 2 CDs and or songs together Mariah Carey Butterfly and 69 Boys. I would simply get 2 CDs players together and try and play the two and physical mix them. So after I realized that it was going to take a little more technology to make the mix sound right. I got on the computer and downloaded a program called Atomix. So growing up through elementary, middle school, my mixes would get more precise. So being the most popular student in Highschool throwing and djing parties came natural. Me and my group of friends threw the biggest parties in North Dallas from 1999 – 2003. Coming from the djing background, I got the opportunity to go to college. While I was at Texas Southern University, Tavis Smiley invested 2 million dollars into our Radio Station and so then decided to change my major from Computer Science to Radio, TV, Film. This basically when my career took off. While working at my school’s Radio station and CBS Radio and I got the opportunity to dj for Kid Capri, Mya, Rick Ross, Fabulous, Soulja Boy, Fat Pimp, Katy Perry, Pitbull, & Erykah Badu. I got a chance to work with music Video Film Producer Dr. Teeth, hip hop artist Lil Keke, Chamillionaire and Slim Thug. Fast-forwarding now that I have graduated college and moved back to Dallas, TX. I stay involved with all major promoters and club owners fulfilling my passion as a dj in Dallas, Tx. I got a couple of things in the works and ladies and gentlemen just stay tuned. Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Soundcloud, Snapchat, YouTube and Google Virdiko at DJ Sirgene.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road even though djing is fun, it doesn’t pay. So I decided to go back to school in 2013 in Information Technology to enhance my Radio, TV, Film degree I worked so hard for. So now I build computers and software that people dj and edit film on during the week. On weekends I tear them up at the club. Working in IT definitely puts me over the curb financially and djing on weekends is just the Cherry on top.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am known for creating the most customized mixes and actually do that live in the club in the dj world. I am also known for having the most customized 3d lights and having the most customized dj set up with the fastest processor, gfx card enhanced memory and customizable laptop features to headphones and HD projectors. What sets me apart that I am able to perform and show video and holographic images when I dj. Basically bringing Vegas to you. The experience.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up adventurous little kid, I liked to build forts and robots. I was a shy kid until someone picked on me. Basically, a class clown that would always raise my hand and answer the question if I was right or wrong.
