Meet Trailblazer Hillary Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Lewis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hillary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a mom of three young children, a practicing pediatrician and a self-described “education advocate.” I am a Dallas native, graduating from Highland Park High School. After nearly ten years in Houston for medical school at the University of Texas and residency training at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital, I returned to Dallas in 2013.

I am currently in practice at Pediatricians of Dallas & is honored to serve families of her hometown. I believe that educating parents and families is fundamental to the healthy growth and development of children. Accordingly, along with my clinical practice, I fulfill my passion for teaching with some social media education on Instagram at @hillarylewisMD. This social media venture came about when I realized I could only see so many patients/families over the course of a day or week. We also know the capacity for parents to absorb information is limited in a small exam room with a screaming child. There is so much encouragement and good science that I wanted to share with parents. And, we know that people are on social media for information now more than ever. So this seemed like a natural progression.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Navigating a career while raising children is incredibly difficult, as any working parent would attest. A wise mentor once told me that being a working mom was like juggling. But, instead of trying to keep all the balls in the air, it was more important to know which balls were ok to drop.

It takes a village and that is absolutely true. My husband is also a physician, so with the unpredictability of our schedules, surrounding yourself with the loving support of family and community is vital. I would not be able to function without my incredible physician partners at Pediatricians of Dallas, my extended family here in Dallas & the community of my church, Highland Park United Methodist.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a private practice pediatrician. I believe that encouraging, supporting and educating families is the most fundamentally important thing we can do. As pediatricians, we are a unique specialty of physicians because we really have two patients – the child & the parent. You cannot adequately care for the child without empowering parents. This is what has motivated me to extend my education outside of the exam room and onto social media.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
As a working mom, seeking out community and networking is very challenging. The most wonderful thing about our community is all the moms who are willing to help when they know I cannot help – moms who take my kids to soccer or special events. I have so much gratitude for these mom friends who support me!
