Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Trich.
Eric, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a multi-disciplinary artist from Dallas, Texas. I studied animation at the Art Institute and fine art at SMU Meadows. I have owned multiple venues showcasing local artists with an emphasis on creative technology. Currently, my work focuses on mixed reality installations that utilize VR, AR and projection mapping to create immersive experiences.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been easy but I think it’s important to learn from setbacks or mistakes. Owning an art gallery was one of the hardest things I have attempted. It forced me to think about the purpose of art and a space dedicated to viewing it. We had a tire swing and walls floating from chain. I think that’s what pushed me to start creating large scale installations using digital media. It’s about the experience and transforming space.
After the gallery, I opened 3014 Space in Deep Ellum. It was a multi-purpose studio that also served as a venue. We had several shows and I created multiple installations using projection mapping. The city shut us down and I had to pivot even more towards digital media.
Pixel Lab – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pixel Lab is a mixed reality studio that specializes in immersive experiences and digital content creation. We utilize different mediums such as projection mapping, VR, and AR, to allow viewers to explore and discover new ways to interact with the environments we design. I am most proud of the growth we have experienced in such a short amount of time. As technology gets better the limitations of what we can create disappear. I think what sets us apart from other companies in our field is that we come from a fine art background. We make art.
What were you like growing up?
I was social and had lots of friends. I always played sports. In high school, I played football but I was also in AP Art. I always wanted to be an artist because my grandma was an amazing artist. From an early age, she always encouraged me to draw and paint. She would give me her supplies and books when I would visit her.
