Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Brown.
Imani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in the salon. My god mom did my sister and I’s hair every week and as compensation we’d clean the salon for her (folding towels, sweeping hair, etc). My mom is a makeup artist, my grandmother was once a hairdresser, and one of my sisters also is a hairdresser. I went to college and studied criminal justice and realized I’m supposed to be where I’ve always been, so I enrolled in cosmetology school.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had bouts with mental illness that made it hard some days to continue. On top of mental illness, you want to always keep your business in check. My advice for young women starting out is if you have a plan, execute it. Without execution, it will always just be a plan. Don’t let anything stop you from your plan. Not a boyfriend, not depression, nothing! And always do your OWN research. Don’t wait around for someone to give you the answers. That’s why we have google, YouTube, and libraries.
what should we know about Imani & Co? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do nails, hair, and facial waxing. I mainly provide nail services. For special occasions, (weddings, prom, etc.) I provide a full glam service which involves hair, makeup, and jewelry for your special day! As a brand, I’m most proud of the way we handle business. Every guest is like an old friend to me. What sets me apart from others is that I’m flexible in my skills. There’s not one beauty service I CAN NOT provide you.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Honestly, no. I’ve tried the self-help route and it just doesn’t work for me. I’m stubborn and like to do things my way. That’s something I’m definitely working on. However, YouTube and Pinterest are pretty good at keeping me up to date on trends.
