Meet Brad Newton of BN Photo in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Newton.

Brad, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My primary focus has always been on the relationships both in front of and behind the camera. There was always a camera around – a Brownie, a Polaroid, and even an 8mm movie camera. Shots of pets. Shots of brothers. A World War II action movie. In high school, I served as the yearbook staff photographer armed with his trusty 35mm Sears SLR. In college (with the ubiquitous Sears camera), I flunked only one class. Photography. Huh? School just wasn’t my thing…

In 1980, working for a small newspaper, I found myself photographing an old-timers game at Arlington Stadium, home of the Texas Rangers. Five years later, I became the team photographer for the Rangers. For 28 seasons, I chronicled the history of the team, Hall of Fame inductions (Nolan Ryan), All-Star games and the World Series. I have been published in Sports Illustrated, in books such as the Pictorial History of Nolan Ryan, and commissioned work for sports card companies Donruss, Score, and Panini. During my time with the Texas Rangers, my photography expanded as I became a highly sought-after photographer for weddings, portraits, corporate events and the NFL.

Since 2015, I have worked with Grant Miller Photography. Grant’s photography covers political events, high-end corporate events and conferences. I have photographed a number of US Presidents, celebrities, major corporate events, global conferences and large church gatherings. Currently, my clients include the Dallas Cowboys, Southwest Airlines, the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce and the March of Dimes.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur has its advantages and its disadvantages. To say that I am my own boss seems right, but, actually, everyone who hires me is my boss! The struggle is in the perspective. From the micro perspective, the economic ebbs and flows look very daunting but pulling out to a macro view, those ups and downs average out. It’s a lesson that had to be learned along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a teacher for 12+ years and as an improv comedian for the past 35 years, I have learned the importance of relationships. Listening, encouraging, supporting and creating a positive atmosphere (through humor!) have served me well in those professions and are directly applicable to my life as a photographer. When working with a client, whether it be a bride, a law firm, a financial advisor, a clown, or a professional athlete, it behooves me to adapt to each situation, improvise if you will, without losing the predilections which define me and my business. I pride myself in establishing positive relationships while delivering images that meet the needs of the client.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Carrollton is situated in a strategic location in that it easily accesses all of DFW. For someone starting out, I wouldn’t necessarily tell them to sell everything and move to Carrolton but anyone who resides in Carrollton knows that this is a town that has its residents best in mind.
