Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramiro Rodriguez.
Ramiro, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Ramiro Rodriguez, originally from Mexico, I have been in Texas since I was a teenager. My interest in fashion started at an early age. I remember being captivated by the glamorous women in their gowns on the Mexican soap operas.
As I got older, I started creating my own Halloween costumes and my friends would constantly say I should design clothes. I always had doubts about my ability to succeed in the fashion world. I decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in The Art Institute of Dallas. I had completed one year and due to circumstances beyond my control had to put my degree on hold.
During my time away from school, I never lost my interest in fashion. In fact, my interest increased! I was able to return to The Art Institute in 2017 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Fashion Design. I had great professors but one in particular really pushed me hard on my projects. She encouraged me to participate in events and in doing so, I have had pieces shown at the Dallas Museum of Arts, Fashion Group International (FGI), and Men’s Fashion Week Dallas. I also was awarded a scholarship by Executive Women International of Dallas (EWI).
While I was a student, I was presented with the opportunity to become a member of the Fashion Group International (FGI) in which I have had the opportunity to meet Bob Mackie. I have also had the opportunity to meet people in the Fashion field, which I have been in contact to showcase in future fashion shows. One of my final projects at The Art Institute was to create a mini collection of seven looks to be shown at a fashion show when fashion Influences were the judges. In which I was awarded second place on construction and concept of the collection I created.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has definitely not been a smooth road. Again, at the beginning, I had doubts that I had what it takes to be a designer. I believe a lot of my insecurities came from seen some of my peers being so good at what they did and here I am trying to prove myself that I was good enough to be among those talented people. Not only because some of them have been sewing for a long time but also, English is my second language and trying to catch up with all the terminology and sewing techniques was very challenging for me.
I consider myself a shy person when I’m in a new environment, this has been one of the biggest obstacles for me, I understand that in order for me to put myself other, I need to be able to network, especially the industry influencers It has been a slow process on the right direction.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I consider myself a designer who is not afraid of drama when it comes to design. I enjoy creating pieces for a woman who is confident and ready to be noticed. My school collection was in women’s wear, and now I’m teaching myself the menswear side of fashion. I just finished creating a mini collection of formal menswear jackets. As a business, I want to get to the point where I’ll be able to design for all kinds of body types man and women. When it comes to women’s wear, I specialize in couture techniques and fabric manipulation. In menswear, I want to target the man who is also not afraid to wear exaggerated silhouettes or bold colors and designs,
What I am most proud of about my style is that I’m not afraid to try something new, the use of exaggerated volume in garments, my target market is someone who wants to stand out from the crowd. What sets me apart from other designers in Dallas is to take the risk to be different and bold. I always ask myself, “would you wear that” that’s the beginning process for designing for me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe Dallas definitely has a lot of potential in becoming one of the big fashion cities, there is a lot of special events already where I have had the opportunity to attend, and I can see my fashion being a part of those event events. Cities such as New York and Los Angeles are known for being the fashion cities, but with that comes the competition among famous designers, which makes out harder to step top to the big names in fashion. I believe Dallas will be a part of those fashion cities in the future.
