Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Baker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My vision for Move Athleisure began in 2017 at age 49. I found myself struggling about what to do with my time after my 22-year marriage ended, and my 3 boys were growing up. I was fortunate to be a stay at home Mom, but found myself searching for a new purpose in life. I realized that at this point in my life I needed to do something positive, and passionate about. However, I was not sure what that path might be. I have always loved fashion and interior design. I was also adamant about staying healthy, eating right, and of course integrating fitness into my daily routine. I had run a half marathon, and loved to spin, bike, and workout.
I was so tired of seeing the same cookie cutter workout attire on everyone. I began researching different brands from all over the world and realized the amazing world of athleisure. Most brands cater to a specific size, but also to their workout. I researched everything from muscle mapped high impact leggings for athletes, to lower impact workouts such as Yoga, and everything in between. After hard work and research…..a year or so later, Move Athleisure was founded.
My mantra became about empowering women. Move Athleisure’s vision is this.. .. “The key to a peaceful mind is embracing your ability to change your career, your style, and your life at any age.” Move is dedicated to empowering women, giving back to the community, and of course, looking good while doing it. This store has changed my life, and I have found that new beginnings can be beautiful. I now know that it is never too late to make a change. Move’s clothes can take you from a high impact workout, or yoga… to lunch, and even a night out on the town. Move Athleisure caters to all body types and price points alike. Move carries around 25 unique and trendy brands. A few of our brands are…ALO, Ultracor, Vimmia, Splits59, 925 Fit, Glyder, Beach Riot, PE Nation, Sorel, just to name a few. #nevertoolate #moveforward #moveon
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been challenging at times. I designed and decorated my store myself, and hit some unexpected roadblocks along the way. Times have been a struggle lately with COVID19 upon us, and it has been difficult. I am so grateful for my many loyal customers. My online store has also helped relieve some stress.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the most proud of how I have brought back the personalized shopping experience. I am very hands-on with my customers. I am aware of their likes and dislikes and buy accordingly. I have learned what people want, and try to have it on hand for them. I have a large television for the guys that don’t want to miss the big game while shopping with their significant others. I always offer an adult beverage to make their shopping experience not so painful:) I am very lucky that most of my customers always come back, even just to visit and catch up.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Longview, in East Texas. I was very involved in my high school Longview High School. I was a twirler, student body class Treasurer, annual staff, on the Longview Bank and Trust student board of directors. I was very outgoing and had many close friends. I am a graduate of Texas Christian University and an avid Frog Fan. Move Athleisure celebrates Purple Fridays. I give a discount if you have on purple on game weekends, and my sign lights up purple instead of blue on game days. My Father also played basketball at TCU and won the Southwest Conference Championship in 1958. My boys both attend TCU also. Let’s just say we are a Frog Family!!
