Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo Michael Martin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angelo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as early as age four, taking piano lessons and playing recitals until about the age of eight, at which time I discovered how much I loved football. It wasn’t until I got to the age of 15 and got introduced to the bass guitar that I rediscovered my love for music. When I was growing up, if you didn’t have two or three people playing music with you, you were just practicing. It’s funny looking back on it, but that’s just the way it was. I started out on bass with a five-piece band out of Waukegan, IL, that went by the name of Eclipse.
We played some covers but we were mostly excited about creating our own material. I went own to play with Unity and The Mcbride Affair out of the same area and soon moved on to attend college at Grambling State Univ., where I would play with the group P.O.L.O. for the duration of my attendance. After moving on from G.S.U. I would attend The Art Institute of Dallas to become proficient in audio engineering. I was later hired as head engineer of an independent record label that went by the title Pelican Records. After a short stint with Pelican Records, I moved on to Houston, TX where I became the head Music producer for another Indie label that went by the name Sixtone Records. After Sixtone went belly up, I finally got the nerve and ambition to start my own production company, Blak Whole Muzik Group. Over the time I spoke of, I met many inspiring and gifted individuals, all of whom I respect and cherish.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not even close to smooth. I had early bouts with drugs in my life that took me down some dark streets. Mix that in with youthful exuberance and an earth-sized ego and you have a cocktail for disaster and self-destruction. However, I never lost sight of my love for music through it all and my desire to be a better person. I also have two amazing parents that never gave up on me. I owe them everything.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We are Blak Whole Muzik Group. We create music for just about anything, including but not limited to; commercial jingles, birthday songs and movie scores. We also release music albums for public consumption. I personally use my skill set to produce music, write songs and engineer musically designed projects. I think what I’m most proud of is the fact that I made it through a storm that I have no intention of returning to thanks to so many inspiring people in my life. I can’t say what sets Blak Whole Muzik Group apart, but I know we are all created as individuals with our own unique coding and that’s what I try to put into everything I do.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh, my God… LOL. I got a long way to think back. I would have to say my favorite memories come from just being a kid and being carefree with no worries and no responsibilities. I know that’s vague, but I had a cool childhood and a lot of cool friends along the way. All colors and nationalities. So I guess the entire childhood is a favorite memory for me.
