Meet Rosanne Rickett of Little Harts Preschool in Lucas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosanne Rickett.

Rosanne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I fell in love with four year olds during my student teaching experience in the early childhood lab at BYU and knew I would love creating a special program for that age. However, I had the last of my five children in elementary school and had taught Kindergarten in public school for 3 years before I found the opportunity to start Little Harts Preschool with my friend Carol Barratt. She had found an old farm house on a beautiful piece of land in the country. We wanted to create a farm style preschool where children could enjoy a country atmosphere with green fields, farm animals, and a gardening program. Carol has always owned horses and wanted to share that love with children through pony parties and summer camps. So, we became partners in business. We worked together with our husbands to design and remodel the old farm house into a charming country school for children. While Carol and her husband Mark own the house the land and the animals, I own and direct Little Harts Preschool and rent from them. We opened in 2007 with just 7 students and it wasn’t long before we were full with nearly 70 children enrolled either full time or part time. Carol runs the summer camp and pony parties. Carol provides pony rides for our preschool children 2 or 3 times each month. It has been a great partnership and I believe we have touched the lives of hundreds of kids for good.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle was getting the city of Lucas to approve the property for a business. After appearing before the city council and getting friends there to support us, we were finally given a special permit to build the preschool.

Little Harts Preschool – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Little Harts Preschool and private Kindergarten is in a little red school house nestled in the green fields and tall trees of Lucas Texas.

Preschool and Kindergarten educational subjects include: Reading and Math readiness, Science, History, Arts & Crafts, Music, Gardening, Gymnastics and Cooking. These subjects aren’t taught by just reading books or looking at pictures, but rather with seeing, touching and experiencing.

We see children’s creativity blossom as they experience the wonders of nature through: growing vegetables in the garden, meeting live farm animals and riding ponies & pony carts.

We have a small class size which allows us to give individual attention to every child from two teachers per preschool classroom.

There are also fun celebrations and creative activities for holidays and special events.

We accept all children ages (3 potty trained) to 6 years old.

We also offer winter camp and spring break camps, see more information on this website.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We are most proud when parents tell us their kids love to come to preschool and when they tell their friends about us, and when we have a wait list of families who want to join our program.
