Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Hibbard.
Hi Cody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So, I was headed down to Conroe, TX, for a job in March/April 2019. I stopped off in Crockett to see some friends of mine, and we went to Tata’s Tex Mex. Our waiter stopped me while I was ordering and said, “I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but you don’t sound at all how you look.” I told him that I get it all the time and my buddy I was eating with told him if he thinks that’s weird, he ought to hear me sing. We got done eating and the waiter came back. He asked if I played guitar. I told him a little bit, not much, but I knew a few songs. He said that the cook had a guitar in his car and asked if I would play what I know.
I had mine in my truck, so I grabbed it and played them the three songs that I knew. It was just a “right place at the right time” situation. The manager of the place asked if I would play a show and I told her yes, even though I had no clue really what that meant at the time. I started writing music later in the summer and kept playing little restaurant gigs for fun. I dropped my first single, “Half Whiskey, Half Lonely,” in Sept. 2019, and it did a lot better than I thought it would. Things just kept falling into place, so I put a band together and dropped an EP in Jan. 2020, which started putting me on the map to places. I signed a booking deal in July of 2020 and dropped three more singles in the summer that have done well. It’s just been a lot of hard work, luck, and counting blessings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t complain because it has been a way smoother road for me than a lot of other artists, even starting off in this Pandemic year. There definitely have been some challenges and some learning moments, but that’s part of any industry I’ve ever been in.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do a lot of different things. I use to be a pipeliner before I started the music business. That’s what I was actually headed down to Conroe for, was an oilfield job. I actually still work there throughout the week. As for the music, of course, you have the songwriting, the shows, and everything that comes with it, but you also have the business side where I’m fielding phone calls and emails, planning and scheduling, and just making sure everything runs as smoothly as it possibly can. I wouldn’t say that I really specialize in anything or anything that sets me apart from anyone else. All I know is that I’m very driven and try to strive to improve something every day.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Faith, Family, Friends, and the ones that support you. Because if it wasn’t for any of them, I’d have nothing and for sure wouldn’t be where I’m at today.
