Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Ermatinger Nay.
Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a legal assistant for my stepmom’s criminal defense firm for about 2 years and we had investigators that handled some of our cases.
One day, I went with our investigator to find a witness and hunted him down in the middle of a junkyard where he was looking for car parts with his dad. We needed the witnesses in court quickly and he was wearing boots, basketball shorts and a cutoff tee-shirt. We got him and took him to Rue 21 where we let him pick out an outfit for court. The witness was a young boy who lived very poorly and was the sweetest kid ever. I ended up taking him home after court where he fixed my radio in my car for me and his mother invited me in for dinner. I was hooked that day and knew I wanted to be a private investigator.
I then went on to work for another private investigations company where we handled mostly criminal defense. I worked for them for a couple years and went through the UNT PDI Program that made me eligible to take the state test to open my own investigations firm. I passed the test and opened up Ermatinger Private Investigations, LLC in May 2012 at the age of 23. Business grew like crazy and here I am going into 2018 at the age of 29 running a full time investigations company. My heart is with criminal defense work but I love civil work and genealogy investigations too.
I office in a historic train depot station in downtown Waxahachie owned by my father in-law and I have a few part time employees to help with civil my investigations.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been extremely blessed with business but there are some hard times. The job is very demanding and it’s not a 9-5 type of gig. Work comes home with me and there are no “days off” when I am the boss. I don’t get paid unless I work. Thankfully, a lot of my work can be done from the computer or from another State. One of my part-time employees is my mother who is retired and she helps out a ton when I travel.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ermatinger Private Investigations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The main thing I do for my investigations company is work alongside defense attorneys on criminal cases. I work anything from ticket cases to capital murders. As a defense investigator, I interview witnesses, serve subpoenas, hunt down witnesses, run background checks, serve subpoenas, testify in court, help prepare for trial and anything else that the attorney needs to be done.
I also do genealogy investigations for a large bank in the United States and build family trees that go back as far as the 1700s. I love this type of work because I connect family members that didn’t even know the other existed. It is amazing what I can find out online about people and their history.
I also do civil investigations that include anything from child custody to divorce to cheating spouses. This type of work gets your adrenaline going because it’s easy to get caught when you are tailing someone or following them into businesses, etc.
I am most proud of the fact that I am a 29-year-old female who did not receive a college degree and am running a very successful business going on 6 years that is mainly a field full of men.
I believe being a young female investigator is what sets me apart from most investigation firms. I can fit in with many different age groups, dress up or down depending on who I am trying to get information from and am easily approachable. I can connect with children and other individuals who feel I am easy to talk to and that makes my job easier and so worth it. On my email I have a quote that explains it perfectly; ” “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” ~ Steve Jobs
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I LOVE the restaurants in Dallas along with the boutiques. I am not a fan of the traffic since I am a small town girl.
