Meet Shajuana Middlebrooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shajuana Middlebrooks.

Shajuana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello! My name is Shajuana, owner and founder of BGA Apparel. Born and raised in Fort Worth, I always had a knack for art and design. Throughout grade school, I took art classes which led to me pursuing and receiving a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Communications. After college, I had a few different jobs while also being a freelance designer and muralist. About seven years ago, I got offered the opportunity to leave corporate America to use my talents and work in a field that I enjoy.

I started working at a local screen printing company (All City Screen Printing in Fort Worth) as the designer/manager. Day in and day out I would help bring the visions of others to life, but longed create something of my own. I wanted something for my son, Kai, and I to wear that we could be proud of. Black, Gifted and Amazing (BGA) were three powerful words that encompassed who we are. After designing the logo, I made a few pieces of apparel to wear. To my surprise, they received so much love. The turning point was during a trip to Houston (November 2019) to visit some college friends. After hearing their praise and encouragement, I decided to take their suggestions and start a clothing brand. Over the next couple months, I got to work creating new design concepts, developing the brand, and designing my website and marketing material. I officially launched the brand January 16, 2021, on the cusp of a heightened awareness of social injustice for black people during a pandemic. Even though these may seem as obstacles, the brand spoke for itself and resonated with supporters. The demand for the brand and its message increased. If you were to ask, is my business where I want to be? I’d say it’s not even close, but I believe by faith that one day you’ll see the brand not only online but in your favorite retail stores worldwide! (Quick plug) If you live in the DFW area, some items are available in Urban Hype, located in the Grand Prairie Premium Outlet Mall!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, there have been some challenges. I’ve had clothing inventory issues stemming from the pandemic. This resulted in not being able to offer certain collections I’d worked hard on. Another challenge is marketing and knowing the how/when/where/why.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a graphic designer, I specialize in t-shirt graphics, logos, promotional and marketing materials. I’m most proud of my brand, BGA, and what is had become. I’ve been told that what sets me apart from other designers is that I’m able to bring a client’s vision to life even when they can’t articulate their own idea.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The best advise I can give is to not be afraid to ask for help. You won’t be the expert in every aspect of your business. Save yourself time, energy and money by finding/hiring someone who is.
