Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathew Martinez.
Hi Mathew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I went to culinary art school and had worked as a chef all my life. While I was working at a restaurant in Uptown, Dallas, the restaurant closed suddenly, but instead of finding another job, I decided to take a break. During that time, an opportunity came up in the construction industry at a small gate and fence company. While working there, I realized that I had found a way to fulfill my passion for creativity and entrepreneurship. In 2007, I branched out on my own and started Azul Gates and Fence.
As the business grew and as the construction industry evolved, I realized there was a need for more custom construction work so to meet those needs, we began operating under a new name, AGF Custom Metal Concepts, in 2017, to better reflect our new business focus.
As of 2017, our new business focus is custom metalwork. We are no longer limited to gates and fences. We also custom design and build very unique projects, including decks, pergolas, glass doors,floating stairs and even parcel postal mailboxes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges throughout the process. Most recently, with our recent growth, we’ve had to re-evaluate the brand and really hone in on our niche. With that also came finding the right staff to fulfill the needs of our clients and our growing business. As a business owner, sometimes I am faced with budgeting issues and tough decisions, but I always try to stay positive, learn and grow from each challenge. Like everything else, there are good days and bad days, but I take each day as it comes.
As you know, we’re big fans of AGF Custom Metal Concepts. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
AGF Custom Metal Concepts is a custom metal fabrication company specializing in high-end, unique custom metal and wood work for residential and commercial clients in the North Texas Region. We are passionate about what we do so we approach every project as a work of art and work closely with each client from design, material selection to finishing details and installation.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up as a normal kid, with scrapes and bruises from playing outside, but I was always a daredevil and adrenaline junkie, which led to having many broken bones, unfortunately.
I also always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My parents instilled in me that I could have whatever I wanted as long as I worked hard for it. That’s pretty much how I lived at an early age. If I wanted something, I would go out and paint houses, wash cars, mow lawns to save enough money to buy it. Growing up this way taught me good work ethic and the value of time and money.
