Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Burkey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband, Mike and our son, Patrick and I opened our first vomFASS in December of 2016. We actually started the process about 18 mos prior to that. My husband and I decided we wanted to have our son in business with us so that he wouldn’t have to go through corporate America – since things in corporate America have changed so much. He also was ready to roll up his sleeves and work side-by-side with us to build this business from the ground up.
Less than 30 days after opening Store #1, we opened Store #2!! Yes, we did!!! It was a ton of work but we are so glad that we did. We are about to celebrate both one year anniversaries. We have signed a 6 store deal in the DFW area and are currently looking for the right location for Store #3.
A family business can be so rewarding!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m not sure if there is anything in life that is a smooth road!!! Some of our struggles dealt with the Texas alcohol laws and where we could locate our stores as counties are dry, shopping centers that wouldn’t allow alcohol, to landlords with issues regarding our signage, and coordinating all fixtures that were coming from Germany were just a few of the struggles. In the end, I believe that everything worked out just how it was supposed to.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the vomFASS story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business is called vomFASS. It is a German word meaning “From the Barrel”. We offer extra virgin olive oil, made from the fruit balsamic vinegar, small-batch whiskey, Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Armagnac, Cognac, Brandy, Vodka, Gin, Tequila, many liqueurs from all over the world, and a selection of wine. We are the ONLY retail store that offers oils, vinegars and alcohol.
We are known for our unique concept that allows you to Taste Before You Buy and of course, our one-on-one personal service. We actually take you on a tour “around the world”. We offer private events, gifts in all price ranges, and an experience that you will never forget, not to mention the quality of our products is second to none. vomFASS has a direct relationship with all of our producers – many are families that have been in business for generations.
What sets us apart? Our combination of oils, vinegars, and alcohol, our knowledge of the products and our staff that prides themselves on the personal service we offer.
We are proud to be the first of its kind in the DFW area- breaking ground and making history. We are proud to be a family owned and operated a business with the emphasis on our customers and their experience inside of vomFASS.
