Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Greco.
Nick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We started back in November of 2018 as a different business called Hello Honey Do. We partnered with real estate professionals and helped set their clients up with all of their utilities when they were moving into new homes.
It was a great foot in the door, but ultimately there were a lot of things about the model that we didn’t love. What wound up happening was people kept asking us for additional services when we were setting them up on the initial services they needed before moving into their home. Things like granite counter removal, yard service pros, pool pros, painters etc… so the seed was planted that there was a lot more opportunity than just the initial services we were currently setting people upon. We got the idea to build a new type of home services platform once we started talking to some of the contractors that we were meeting at realtor networking events.
After about six months of development, brainstorming and research, we launched Homester Home Services in Jan of 2020, officially launching the app in June of 2020. Homester Home Services is The Most Simple Home Services App EVER!! We built Homester to try and solve the problems that we saw and heard with all of the major home service platforms for both contractors and consumers. Initially we have launched solely in DFW, so we are born and built right here in DFW.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a very interesting road. We’ve had one major pivot with several small ones along the way. Our original plan was to launch the platform in March of 2020… which wound up being the worst time to launch anything. So we actually made the apps live in the App Store and Google Play stores without telling anyone. We were really unsure of how the service pros were going to be affected by the shutdowns.
Every few days I would get out of my house and go down to QT to get a drink just to keep from losing my mind. While out, I would often see service trucks stopping in for gas or a pit stop and I’d just ask them how business was going during everything. Much to my surprise, a lot of these guys were actually crushing it!
It seemed that so many people were stuck at home. They were getting things done they had long neglected. There was also the fact that people’s houses still needed work, despite the fact there were shutdowns. So after debating what we should do, we ultimately decided to take matters into our own hands and launched in late June of 2020.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For most of my career, I have been in and around the startup world. My two most prominent experiences have been as the 1st employee at two different digital marketing startups. One was based in Provo, UT, where I was going to school and the other is in downtown Dallas. I had dropped out of college initially to join my first startup back in 2013. Just this month I finished my Undergraduate Degree online after a few years of my wife pushing me to get it done.
My experience working for these startups was like a crash course on how to launch, grow and scale a business, but without anything at stake other than the opportunity cost of not pursuing a traditional career. While both wound up not working out how I had originally planned, they have certainly prepared me for launching my own companies.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There have been a lot of people who have contributed to the success of Homester and in my journey through entrepreneurship. My co-founders are my dad, John Greco and my brother, Andrew Greco. It has been really fun getting to work with them day in and day out. Our other great partner is a young and awesome mortgage pro, Mark Dean. Mark was the first one, outside of my dad, to who I told my idea for Homester to. He was all-in right away and has been a spark plug to our business every since.
Doing something like this can be really interesting. I’ve found that I’ve had a lot of supporters who I haven’t had contact with for quite some time, but their personalities learn towards something that connects with what we’re trying to do and we bond over that shared belief in trying to build something.
