Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Farber.
Hi Alexandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my journey as an artist from a very young age. Some of my earliest memories are from ballet lessons and recitals; my mother entered me into classes when only 3 years old and I simply never stopped dancing since that time. Other fond memories include painting myself and my sister, as well as the trunks of some of our trees, in the backyard when we were young.
Needless to say, self-expression was something I had a hunger for. Twenty-eight years later, I am in my tenth season with Texas Ballet Theater where I am a principal dancer, I regularly exhibit my visual artwork, I have achieved my Bachelor in Science with honors in psychology online part time, and this past weekend I premiered a piece of my choreography at The Modern Museum of Art Fort Worth.
Choreography, dancing, and creating visual art (whether as the artist or the subject for photographers) are what I fill my best days with, and I am always looking to new ways in exploring expression.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the struggles I have faced along the way include the under-representation of women in the ballet world as choreographers- the majority of work done, in the past and today, are choreographed by white men. It is important for the dance world, especially the ballet world, to embrace more women in choreographic and directive roles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a principal ballet dancer, visual artist, model, and choreographer. I specialize in using movement as a means of conveying emotion and storytelling. I am most proud of particular roles I have performed, such as the White Swan Odette and Black Swan Odile in Swan Lake, as well as the principal role of William Forsythe’s contemporary ballet In The Middle Somewhat Elevated. Additionally, exhibiting my visual art in Paris this year and my choreography at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth were very proud moments. What sets me apart from others is my multidisciplinary approach from my many arenas of training combined with my Jewish heritage, life experiences as an empowered woman, and hunger to create works that move people.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The writings of Leonora Carrington are some of my favorites. Her life as an artist and her work, both visually and in writing are great inspirations to me. They embody surrealism at its best, a style I draw from when replicating or even in inspiring entirely different styles.
