Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Carter.
Hi Kenya, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story is simple. As a kid, I fell in love with music. Every sound connected me to a world of rhythm. As I grew into my passion for the art, I began putting words together, creatively. Eventually, it turned into me wanting something bigger… I wanted to be an artist, and I have worked nonstop to make that happen.
I am currently the Co-Owner of Carter and James Enterprise and the Owner of Full Circle Artist Group. I’ve received press for my accomplishments as an artist and business owner. I’ve worked with other artists, videographers, producers, and authors on collaborative projects beyond what I could have ever imagined.
2021 has actually been an incredibly promising year for myself and my brand. Last year I narrated my first book as an artist and this year, my company Full Circle Artist Group published the soundtrack for Author Takara Carter, my wife, recent publication “Wrongfully Convicted.” The published work includes songs and poetry surrounding social justice, law, and police procedural.
I am blessed to have my wife as my Publicist. She is a creative who has been the support needed to keep things operable. I am currently working on finalizing my backlist catalog and preparing for new material for the upcoming year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It took me a while to get here. Like I said before, I love music. I love the art, the creativity, the long nights, studio sessions, and networking, but the road hasn’t been easy. For years, I kept telling myself that I would put out something, but I kept pushing it off. Sometimes as a creative it is hard to not overthink the process. That was me. For a long time.
I think some of the major struggles is consistency. In music, it’s not just about being consistent as an artist. You also have to find a team of people who are consistent too. It may be times where I want to get in the studio or get samples, beats, etc. If the people around me, who I’m trusting to help me with my journey, then I have to network with others who are just as hungry.
For now, though, I feel like I have a solid team.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I consider myself as a Creative. In other words, whatever foundation I have to engage in creativity, that Is who I am. My specialty is music, but I don’t allow that to minimize my growth.
I’m most proud in my ability to adapt. As I previously noted, I’ve worked as a narrator, I’ve studied marketing, I’m a business owner and so much more. There’re many layers to my creativity and it will only grow from here.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I have to say that culture overall. There’s so much talent in every aspect, from food to artistry. I’m a people person, so being able to connect, network, and share my talent is what I’ve enjoyed most. I’ve been in the studio and worked with other artists out here and they showed nothing but love.
