Today we’d like to introduce you to Rane Wallace.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While in college at Texas Tech a good buddy of mine asked me how I define success. While the answer was relatively short, the journey was far from that. I knew then and there that the way I define success is by being happy and helping other people. It was at that point in my life that I changed majors and decided to pursue counseling. I switched majors and a couple of years later I completed my undergrad. That fall, I started a master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Texas Wesleyan. While in school I knew that I eventually wanted to see clients in the private practice setting and was working as a substance abuse counselor in a private behavioral health hospital and then as a counselor in the legal system. After receiving my Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy, I spent the first year or two working full-time in the non-profit sector while researching and developing a plan for opening up a private practice. One day heading to work while thinking about names that would help remove the stigma from therapy, and combine wellness/counseling with Fort Worth, I stumbled upon the idea for Fort Wellness. The name was decided then and the road map started to get planned out. I read books, researched other private practices marketing, talked to friends and colleagues, and all of that kind of fun stuff. At one point the New Year rolled around and I made it a goal to get the practice up and running soon. I had a lot of people that inspired me, challenged me and encouraged me as well. During that period my wife and I ended up getting Chinese food to go one night and the fortune cookie said, “Your goal will be met in two months.” My wife put that on the fridge and so every time I was around there I saw that fortune. She’s amazing and brings out the best in me. While it might sound silly, that fortune helped get the ball rolling and it became a matter of when and not if. I had a lot of fears about failing and the unknown but that fortune, friends and family, and some positive self-talk helped squash that. Fort Wellness Counseling Center opened for clients in July of 2016
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wouldn’t say that it has been a smooth road and it has been a little bumpy at times. While it has bumpy, we haven’t come to a stand-still in traffic or experienced anything that caused us to turn around and go home. The road less traveled has been an awesome journey for me. I’d say that the hardest part was the initial first couple of months where I only had one or two clients scheduled and one or both of them cancelled and no showed. With that being said, it is part of the job and just something that happens from time to time in this industry. It just wasn’t as fun when it happened right out of the gates and was discouraging when I was heading home and didn’t see anyone.
Please tell us about Fort Wellness Counseling Center.
Fort Wellness Counseling Center in Fort Worth is a premier private practice that specializes in emotional well-being by providing intensive counseling services to those in need. We do individual counseling sessions, couples counseling and see the entire family. Fort Wellness sees clients that range in age from early adulthood and all the way up. I’d say that my specialty in terms of counseling is substance abuse and mental health. My undergrad was in Community, Family & Addiction Services and I started off as a chemical dependency counselor. I’d say one of things that sets me apart is my ability to establish a professional relationship with my clients and provide fresh perspectives. As far as what we are most proud of, I’d say a combination of ethics and doing what is best for the client. I’d say what sets me apart is just my passion for helping others.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t say that I would change anything. Every obstacle has challenged me and taught me invaluable lessons.
