Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for the beauty industry since I was a teenager. Unfortunately, I did not pursue my passion right away. When I moved back to Dallas after living in Florida I decided to enroll in Paul Mitchell. I knew that it was going to be a challenge because at the time I had 2 kids under the age of 3. This was one of the best decisions that I ever made. The entire time while enrolled in the Esthetics program I knew that all I really wanted to do was eyelash extensions. Upon graduating I attended my very first lash training with Xtreme Lashes. That opportunity made me realize this is what I wanted to do long-term. From there I worked at a few different lash companies and eventually went on to be a Regional Trainer with a leading lash brand in the industry. After being laid off during covid, I decided to achieve another goal by opening Zena Miko Lash and Academy in Rowlett, TX.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have definitely had my fair share of challenges being a new business owner. There is a lot that I have learned by good ol’ trial and error. I think one of the biggest misconceptions that people have when starting a business is that you don’t have to work as hard as this is so untrue. Although it has not been a smooth road it has been very rewarding knowing that my blood sweat and tears is being poured into something that will one day be amazing. I think the one thing that has helped me overcome challenges and obstacles is networking with other small business owners and seeing what has worked for them in making their business a success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Zena Miko Academy is an Eyelash salon and training studio. We specialize in offering guests classic, hybrid, volume, and mega volume lashes. At Zena’s, we also offer facial waxing and makeup services. We also sell retail to guests to help them with the upkeep up their lashes. In addition to this we sell our very own branded eyelash extension supplies to other licensed professionals. On the weekends we offer a 2 day lash certification to beauty students and beauty professionals who want to add lashes as one of the services that they offer their clients. I believe what sets us apart is we are very small and give our guests a personalized service. We are not trying to hurry them in and out but rather give them an experience that is both relaxing and calming.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the DFW area specifically Rowlett. It is a small quaint city where everyone is friendly. People don’t mind saying hello and supporting small business. Rowlett is the kind of town where you can find everything that a big city offers without all the hustle and bustle. What I feel Rowlett is missing is more options when it comes to services such as lash extensions. This is one of the reasons I opened Zena Miko Lash.
