Rising Stars: Meet Montoya Coleman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Montoya Coleman.

Hi Montoya, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
A mother walking into worth and learning to self-love & heal by sharing her story in hopes to inspire others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been easy! I have had so many uncomfortable circumstances over the last three years. Like many, 2020 was the year of financial hardship, personal growth and truly leaning on faith and trusting God.

In May of 2020, I was laid off. I have always been a person that has always been on top of her game when it comes to financial stability, career, and owning motherhood. Being laid off, clearly caught me off guard, especially since I had ended a long-term relationship with my son’s father just months prior. Things were chaos on the coparenting home front.

But I am a true believer that everything happens for a reason – and had it not been for the pandemic I may have continued to believe that my daily stability came from a job. I’ll be the first to stay it if you haven’t heard it already, the only true stability you have is from God. There hasn’t been a situation yet, that I haven’t overcame… I always remind myself “But God.”

One of my favorite scriptures to mediate on throughout the year was Matthew 6:34; “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In September of 2020, I launched my personal Motherhood + Lifestyle blog; Mama Culture. As a newly single mother navigating (and striving) for a healthy coparenting relationship, learning self-love & healing, and developing a closer relationship with God – I wanted to share my story to encourage others that were suffering through hard times.

I am one of the first mothers in my circle of friends, and many of my friend would say I was the “mama of the group,” lol. Whatever the case, I absolutely believe that my son was a gift from above. In many ways becoming a mother allowed me to have a better understanding of unconditional love and walking into my worth.

I envisioned Mama Culture to be a platform to encourage and inspire women to live life fully – unfiltered. Often as mothers, we pour into everyone but ourselves and deal with a lot of suffering for love. I wanted to share my story but also share the stories of others whom are learning to love themselves and be authentically YOU because God created us all for a reason. Not only are we mothers (which comes with many hats) we have a God-given purpose.

In the future, I hope to have a database of women and their business within a directory. Supporting one another as we navigating new endeavors.

Creating a business and social platform is hardwork. It’s challenging at times to keep going but I have met many amazing mothers through the platform. We are currently undergoing a website rebrand and refresh. I cannot wait to really see the vision I have come together. I am a creative true at heart and enjoy creating content and sharing various crafting activities with my son.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes! I’ve learned that tomorrow is not promised. You have to live life for today and not worry too much about the past or too far into the future. Having a support system and community is important to your personal growth. And most importantly I learned that developing a deeper and closer relationship with God allows you to live life fully
