Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Roberts.
Hi Tim, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Southwestern Assemblies of God University in 2011 with a degree in Communications and an eye towards filmmaking and creative arts. I did the typical route of freelancing, from filming weddings, shooting soccer tournaments, writing high school sports article for the Dallas Morning News, and editing ad bumpers at Daystar TV. After a couple of years of freelance life and working at my old university, I landed a job at CW33 News in Dallas as a Multimedia Journalist for their revolutionary newscast, “Newsfix.” After four and a half exciting and exhausting years of covering news and sports in DFW, I knew it was time for a transition.
At that exact time, the Mansfield Convention and Visitors Bureau was looking for a brand-new Marketing and Promotions Manager position. The job was perfect and gave me the opportunity to still keep creating interesting stories and helping promote this area to a wider audience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like all college grads for a few years there, we graduated into a rough economy where finding a job was tough. I sent out over 200 job applications and went in for a half dozen interviews where I didn’t get the job before I finally landed a position. It taught a lot of humility and me double down on working harder to prove I could make it in the communications world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Video production is my primary area of expertise. At the news station, I learned how to edit lightning fast while not compromising quality, and that is my biggest strength still. This allows me to quickly get smaller projects out of the way and focus more time and attention on creating top-notch, larger-scale content. Obviously, the primary videos getting made for tourism are event marketing and general ads for the location, however, my experience has allowed me to do some longer-length documentaries about the area that can be enjoyed by locals and build more prestige around our area. It’s paid off with a number of industry awards and honors.
