Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series. Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

It’s definitely still not smooth even now. There are days when I barely sleep because I’m juggling school, assignments, exams, and content deadlines — and I still have to show up smiling in videos. It’s exhausting at times, and people often don’t see the hard side of it. But I’m slowly learning to manage my time better. It’s not easy, but this is something I’ve loved since I was a child, so despite the challenges, I truly enjoy it. Read more>>

I made the courageous decision to travel to Colombia, a country recognized for its excellence in body sculpting techniques and postoperative care. I came with a heart full of hope and the desire to learn everything he could. For several months, I immersed myself in a new world, traveling and learning from the best in the countryside. My goal was to combine the best of medicine and my medical knowledge and beauty, creating something unique that I could offer to my community. That experience not only trained me, but lifted me off the ground and showed me that, even when you feel like a loser, you can find your way back. Read more>>

I think any career has struggles. I’ve been doing this for 17 years now, so quite awhile! The challenges are the same as for any designer: making clients happy and hitting deadlines! There are often hundreds of details for any given project, but my team and I tend to be very organized, so that helps. But the very best and happiest part of what we do is getting to see our clients living in their completed homes. It brings us such joy! Read more>>

In 2010, while working on a grad school project about the social implications of a new website called Chatroulette—a video chat platform that connected strangers at random from across the globe—I met someone unexpectedly. Against all odds, he lived in the same city and shared my creative passions. That random digital encounter turned out to be the love of my life. Just two weeks later, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Thankfully, the malignancy was self-contained and removed through major surgery. He stood by me through it all, and the experience gave me a renewed sense of purpose. I left grad school, and together, we launched our multimedia business: Rockett.net. Read more>>

They all have their own individual personalities.
I have since moved into an environment where I bring some of my photos to life capturing wildlife or nature in a setting that most people may not have ever seen before. One conversation I had with a lady had never heard of the Milky Way before. I fought back a chuckle, but was more than willing to show her other photos I had taken of the Milky Way. Our busy lives today, many people don’t get to see the natural beauty that is around us. If I am able to share with people what I have been able to capture through my lens. I feel I have been given a gift of seeing many different things in life and if I can inspire others to get out and hike out in nature. Read more>>

I always had an interest in graphics and cars. I walked into a print shop to get some labels done and pretty much gravitated to the industry and wanted to learn more about graphics and printing. Then I found out you could print the graphics and install them in the vehicles and it blew my mind how cool it was. So, me being a teacher I went back to community college and learned how to use Adobe software for graphics because that’s where it all starts and then began taking courses from 3m and Avery Dennison on wrapping vehicles. So now, I do stickers, banners, graphics, poster and vehicle wraps from a large format printer. Read more>>

No, it has not been a smooth road—far from it. My journey has been paved with pain, trauma, and trials that forced me to confront deep emotional wounds and spiritual battles. I’ve endured the weight of abuse, abandonment, and disappointment, including the heartache of three failed marriages where I was left feeling unloved, unseen, and spiritually uncovered. Each of those experiences tested my worth and my faith, especially when those I trusted to lead as men of God could not walk in the intimacy or healing required to love me properly. Read more>>

We moved into an apartment on Cleveland Street. My sisters and I hoped this was our chance to build a closer bond with our mom. But shortly after, a new man moved in—unannounced, unintroduced. Once again, my mother’s focus was on her relationships rather than her children. Though I admired her for returning to school and earning a degree, we never felt the love and attention we longed for. When she wasn’t at work, she was out gambling or at bingo. At home, the responsibility fell on my older sister D, who basically raised us. She did her best. She combed our hair, made sure we ate, and showed us love when no one else did. Read more>>

Hi, I’m Nicholas Brooks — Founder and CEO of Velvet Stems, a luxury floral design studio based in Mesquite, Texas, and Enrich Enterprises, the parent company under which I offer business consulting, event planning, and travel services. My journey into entrepreneurship began long before I ever owned a business. In fact, it started in elementary school with fundraisers. I still remember the excitement of selling something and seeing someone actually buy it from me. That feeling — that thrill of connection and exchange — never left. I even won the school’s top seller contest, which earned me a ride in a black limousine and lunch at an Italian restaurant — a moment that made me feel seen, celebrated, and confident in my ability to create value. It hasn’t been a smooth road but definitely worth it. Growing up in a small town as a creative Black woman, it felt like I was always breaking some kind of mold or expectation. There weren’t many examples of people doing what I wanted to do—especially not in music. I’ve faced doubts, rejection and people trying to box me in. There were times I questioned if my voice would be heard. But instead of letting it stop me, I used that pressure to fuel the fire. Every setback has just been another reason to go harder, stay true, and show people what’s possible when you don’t give up on yourself. Read more>>

No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all—and honestly, I wouldn’t want it to be. Becoming Her Within was birthed from pain, trauma, and years of emotional silence. As much as I value growth, I also deeply value relationships. One of the hardest parts of this journey has been parting ways with some owners over time. Whether it’s due to differing expectations, changing goals, or simply growing in different directions, those decisions are never easy. But my love for creating goes way back, even to childhood. I remember being given this old tape recorder, and every day I’d bring it to school to document life from my perspective, talking to friends, capturing little moments, and just being a kid. That early curiosity grew into a love for content creation. I eventually started a YouTube channel where I share my travels and day-to-day life, and it kind of came full circle. Read more>>

After graduate school I was hired at a treatment center for eating disorders. This was a population I had always known I wanted to specialize in-being recovered myself, I could understand the mindset that comes with disordered eating and body image distress. While my personal connection to the treatment of eating disorders led me to this work, my job experience provided me with extensive training opportunities and education to effectively help others in their recovery journey. Prior to leaving the treatment center to pursue private practice I was promoted to Team Leader, and helped write curriculum for the groups our clients participated in; this experience solidified my expertise in eating disorders. I’ve always felt drawn to being in front of the camera — from making silly home videos as a little girl to staging fun photoshoots just for the joy of it. Fashion and makeup were my creative escape growing up, but for the longest time, I never imagined they could be more than just a hobby. I took the traditional path: I went to college, graduated with honors — I’ve always been a bit of a nerd and genuinely loved school. But no matter what I did, something kept pulling me back to creating and sharing my passions with the world. Read more>>

I love the medium and making unexpected things with it. I learned how to make stained glass when I had an idea for a lamp I wanted to make, after that the flood gates opened. I am self taught by reading a lot of bits online, learning from local shops, and just experimenting with the limits of glass. I have also met other talented Stained Glass artists who have taught me a few things. One of the main reasons we wanted to start a studio was to be able to teach classes. I love to teach, and when people want to learn, you can have a lot of fun. Read more>>

Not at all — and I don’t think it ever is for anyone building something from the ground up. One of my biggest struggles was self-doubt, especially in the beginning. I constantly questioned whether my bolder, moodier design approach would be accepted in a world that often celebrates light, bright, and neutral. I spent a lot of time second-guessing my instincts, worried that leaning into what I loved would turn people away. Read more>>

We started small – literally, in a tiny bedroom. One side for nails, the other for teeth whitening and Grillz. Our first clients were friends and family. Word got out, and soon their people were booking too. We’ll never forget that moment when we looked at our calendar and realized: it went from 1-2 appointments a week… to 20. That was when it really hit us , this is more than just a side hustle. This is something real. Read more>>

I am a first generation student that recently graduated December of 2024 from Southern Methodist University, with a bachelors degree in fashion media from the Meadows School of Arts, and a minor in business administration from the Cox School of Business. The idea of me moving to Texas was initially spearheaded by my cousin, who was already a Texas resident in 2010. Moving from the New Orleans area in the hopes of finding work, I began locating employment opportunities pretty fast but my initial love and interest rooted from art was always present. I’d always draw at work and people would complement saying “you don’t need to be here, you need to do something with your art.” And interested, it was never something took seriously, primarily because I didn’t have a direction of the “how to”. This year we expanded yet again adding an upper division team so that if we had to move a player off the D division team they had a team with in the organization to go to. The “D-team” once again took first place in the season and won our third consecutive bid to GSWS in Houston. The “E-team” took 3rd place in season but fell just short of winning a bid in the End Of Season Tournament, and the “C-team” established a solid foundation of players to build upon for next year. As an organization we have also partnered with a local Non-Profit Pitbull Rescue group raising over $1,300.00 in small dollar donations to help save local dogs in distress and we are currently exploring other ways to increase our involvement with The Love Pit rescue. I’m an abstract artist. What matters most to me are unique color combinations, layering, and composition. I’m inspired by textiles, architecture, color, and works of art I’ve encountered in my travels. I love working in layers, building up paint so that earlier moments peek through underneath. The process involves allowing one layer to dry before coming back and adding more. My work is generally lighthearted, cheerful, and full of personality. I aim to create pieces that feel positive and interesting without being too predictable. Read more>>

Our journey into the freedom movement began when one of our clients came in and started sharing some profound truths—things many would label as “conspiracy theories,” but with undeniable evidence to back them up. He told us about the United States operating as a corporation, the Federal Reserve system, and how things like our birth certificates are used as silent tools of enslavement. I had heard bits and pieces before, but this time, it hit different. He walked out to his car, brought back a thick stack of documents, and laid out the truth in black and white. Something in my soul lit up and said, “You have to research this.” Read more>>
