Exploring Life & Business with Colton Capps of Capps Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Capps.

Hi Colton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My interest in film started out in middle school while I was making and editing YouTube videos. In high school, I joined TigerVision, which was my high school’s audio-video production program. Through the program, I created multiple award-winning short films with my peers, worked on news broadcasts for my school, and worked professional film-related events. During high school, I made the decision to pursue film school and a career in cinematography and directing, leading me to the University of North Texas, where I am currently a senior working towards my Bachelor’s in Media Arts. During my junior year of college, I started leading my production company, Capps Productions, where I provide professional videography, editing, and audio production for clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, I’ve loved my experience at UNT and building my company, but challenges present themselves in any situation. Of course, the pandemic rose amidst the end of my freshman year, limiting in-person film opportunities and collaboration with my peers, academically and professionally. Only in the past six months have things really gone back to normal within the local industry. I feel like I lost a lot of opportunities because of this. I have made some wonderful connections in Denton, but I definitely feel like the Media Arts program at UNT and the classes could have offered the students more. Amongst my peers, we agree the program and mentors have set up a ‘fend for yourself’ situation for the students when finding opportunities and practice in the industry, but in the end, putting in hard individual work really does pay off.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Capps Productions is a one-man business where I provide professional videography, editing, and audio production for clients of any kind. I specifically partner with the Dallas Branch of the International Dyslexia Association to provide their members with professional headshots and social media video content. I have produced multiple music videos, created wedding videos, and am working on a series for North Texas Television called “Bothersome Days.” For this series, I was able to provide professional equipment as well as serve as Assistant Director, Editor, and Director of Photography. I am always available to supply my services locally and enjoy working on multiple types of projects in the videography field.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Honestly, the internet is an extremal useful tool. As much as there is disinformation, there is an endless amount of useful information. Besides college courses and field practice, the internet has helped grow my capabilities far and wide, which has been useful when working on projects that I do not have as much experience on compared to my direct expertise.
