Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTasha Oliver LCSW
Hi LaTasha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, here’s a little update – ya girl is fully licensed in the state of Texas as an LCSW. I passed my clinician exam June 2022. For those outside of the social work/mental health community, it’s the acronym for Licensed Clinical Social Worker. This pretty much means I have free reign to practice “social work” as I see fit, within ethical and moral practices of course. Stay tuned for licensing in additional states.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell to the nawhhh – smooth as the stubble growing back on a bald man’s head! I’ve hit the curb a few times, stalled on the shoulder, and got stuck in my lane all because I forgot directions were already given to me. My energetic lovelies will catch that. I’m learning to stay in the present – which means yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not here yet.
Even when tomorrow arrives, it’ll be today again, ya know. Most of our stress stems from worrying about – #1 things we cannot control; #2 business that don’t belong to us; and #3 reference back to #1 and #2! With all of that, I’m learning to trust myself and let my intuition lead me. Those who are meant for will be, and this applies personally and professionally.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Although, I understand that when you provide a service, YOU ARE YOUR BRAND! I’m known for being big on boundaries – both personally and professionally. By no means, am I normal, yet I’m not a celebrity either. I’m a being on a mission, leaving an impact along the way.
However, I’ve learned to view my movements as me aligning with my purpose here on Earth this go around. You my tribe if you caught that. I’m set apart from others because I lack the fear to stand out and create a space I KNOW is frowned upon within the 2 communities I take up space in. The mental health community and the 2a community have been at odds for decades.
Anywho, I operate in a space where both concepts peacefully and effectively exist – teaching Black bodies to protect themselves with and without a firearm. I’m most proud of me putting myself out there, knowing I loathe attention, being in the spotlight, etc.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Spending time in the kitchen with my Mama while she cooked – her allowing me to help – from being a small child to the day she could no longer stand. That’s where I found my love for food and cooking.
