Today we’d like to introduce you to Adean Kingston, MD.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Kingston. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a very early age, I was very keen on obtaining an advanced degree in education that would provide me with a career that would not only be personally and professionally satisfying but also profitable. I set me sight on obtaining a medical degree, and specifically pursing the very competitive field of Dermatology. After graduating from medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, I moved to Dallas to attend UTSW Dermatology Residency program. Having moved to the South from the North, I never imagined actually staying in the Dallas area after completing my training. However, I fell in love with this city, the warmer weather and the people and decided to establish roots here. I was soon approached by the Cooper Clinic to help start a Dermatology Department for their prestigious medical program that specifically embodies preventative health and wellness. For the next 5 years I was invigorated seeing this department flourish and becoming the Dermatologist I always dreamed of becoming. However, at the Cooper Clinic, I was still just an employee… a staff physician and knew I wanted more. Soon I began dreaming of owning my own practice. So in 2013, I opened a solo Dermatology practice in the heart of Uptown that embraces a boutique concept of medicine where patients could receive quality treatment and not feel rushed or mistreated. I specialize in all aspects of Cosmetic Dermatology, provide full body skin cancer exams and surgical treatment, and treat numerous general dermatology conditions. The practice has thrived and I absolutely love what I do and I what I created.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a business owner and practicing Dermatologist can come with many challenges. For instance, the landscape of medical practices is radically changing. Previously, it was very common for solo practices to operate and be financially successful. Now, more and more we are seeing the corporatization of practices where many medical practices are being purchased by a centralized Management Services Organization, a financial group that takes over the “running of the business” and puts physicians back into an employee role. Thus, solo practices are becoming extinct and this jeopardizes the physician-owner model from surviving. More and more solo and small group practices succumb to corporitization because they are experiencing greater revenue losses from lower health insurance reimbursements and an increase in business expenses. My practice has been approached on numerous occasions to “sell out” and the pressure to do so is ever mounting. My goal remains to stay a business owner and physician, but we shall see what the future holds.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Adean Kingston, MD, PLLC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Dermatologists are a sub specialty of medicine. We complete many years of specific cosmetic, medical and surgical training to become experts in our field focusing on the treatment of skin, hair and nail disorders. In addition to completing the required training, I am also Board Certified in Dermatology. I have a passion for skin cancer diagnosis and its medical or surgical treatment. I am known for my thorough full body skin exams and preventive approach to skin health. I also enjoy treating general dermatologic conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, etc. I am an expert injector of Botox, fillers and Sculptra. I have been performing injections for over 15 years. I love cosmetic dermatology because I am not only very skilled technically but also have a great aesthetic eye to rejuvenate the face. My approach is for one to look as natural as possible. I am very proud that our practice takes time with patients. We do not rush patients and value their time. I truly want to help people to look and feel their very best. I have staff that strive to treat patients with a high degree of customer service. We are a small practice that values quality over quantity. We like to get to know our patients on a personal level and treat them as if they are a part of our own family.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are still growing the practice and future plans would be to possibly expand and add more staff, perhaps even another Dermatologist provider or skin care specialists. However, I will always maintain my practice as a boutique feel that caters more to the overall patient experience. Unlike many Dermatologists or other doctors nationwide, I do not strive to open numerous practices spread out over DFW and staff them with physician extenders like PAs and NPs. I truly believe that a physician better serves patients by focusing on their one main office. I am always researching new technology and approaches to facial rejuvenation. The past few decades have brought numerous non-invasive treatments to the forefront to help one feel and look their very best, Popping into the Dermatologist for a quick “pick me up” is now more widely accepted than ever before by both men and women. I can only imagine how great the next 20 years will be. I am eager to learn about the new innovations on the horizon and incorporating them into my practice. I truly feel it is an exciting time to be a Dermatologist!
