Rising Stars: Meet IBK Spaceshipboi

Today we’d like to introduce you to IBK Spaceshipboi.

Hi IBK, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My alias is IBK Spaceshipboi. I was born Ibukun Emuwawon in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. I am a Music Producer, Recording, and Performing Artist using music as a tool to propagate positive messages and inspiring the world. I studied Computer Engineering at Covenant University Otta, Nigeria, but towards the end of my final year at school, I knew for certain I was going to be an artist.

I was the winner of the BEST HIP-HOP ARTIST category at the NIGERIAN GOSPEL AWARDS 2013 and later went on to win the CRYSTAL AWARDS for the same category in 2014. I was also responsible for creating the musical content for the BET CYPHER featuring Nigeria rap acts at the BET HIP-HOP AWARDS 2011. In 2019, my music was used in the (LET’S HEAR IT) campaign for the Grammy Awards.

My Catalog is so diverse; a compendium of genres is what I like to call it. Making music for myself and other recording artistes, TV Shows, Commercials, Movie scores, etc., I like to say I am limitless and enjoy fusing different genres to come up with groundbreaking innovative musical ideas.

Towards the tail end of 2020 during the lockdown, I decided to express himself artistically using the camera as my new medium. I have worked with rising star models in the Dallas Texas area and recently created portraits for the current Miss Black Texas 2023.

I am an artist that goes above and beyond to learn new ways to express the ideas I have on the inside.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success is filled with peaks and valleys. The beauty of the journey, however, lies in the hope and expectation of seeing your vision come to fruition.

The good problem I have always had on this journey is that of always having big ideas. I find it hard to think small and as a result, always run into funding issues. My artistic brain always thinks in counter melodies and by that, I mean, creating multiple individual pieces that come together to tell a unified story. Creating in this form always needs ample capital and that has been my major struggle.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Recently on social media, I put up a video where I was asking my followers this question “How do you introduce yourself to people when you are a great Music producer, singer, songwriter, painter, photographer, cinematographer, creative director, Actor, vocal coach, interior designer…”. I am known for being good at expressing myself in different creative industries. If I have an idea that’s best communicated by a pastry chef, I will become a pastry chef and be so good at it just so I can get that idea out to the world.

I am most proud of being able to learn and grow creatively in anything I seek out to become/do. I have many proud moments in my career thus far, some of which include:

– Being the Nigerian representative at the ONE BEAT musical exchange program that feature 25 musicians form different parts of the world

– Performing at African showcase at South by Southwest (SXSW) alongside the awesome Nigerian Musician BEZ Idakula

– Being the creative director for the MAVINS (a Nigerian music label and collective) which comprised – Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy, Rekado Banks, Dija, Dr Sid, The Prince, Korede Bello from 2015 through 2018

– Having my music (PADEYA) being synced on a rerun of the popular soap opera (THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL)

– Taking the portrait of Miss Black Texas 2023

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Most certainly. The main lesson learnt was empathy and kindness. It also made me value community more
