Today we’d like to introduce you to Cordarryl Franklin.
Cordarryl, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started this C4 NXT LVL movement off the basis of me, wanting to give back to the game I love. This game that I’ve played since the tender age of 5, has brought me a ton of joy. I started out training in 2016, but I really didn’t know how to run a basketball training business. So, I had to shut down, & I resurfaced in summer of 2019. My friend Marckus Vernible, who’s also a trainer. mentored me for like 2 months in 2018. He taught me the in’s & outs of the business. The Basketball training industry has really only been in existence since 2015ish, that’s when I see it kind of explode. So, it’s really no blueprint to how to run this business. So, I had to study & learn on the fly. So, from training outside in the beginning to having my clients train in state-of-the-art facilities, to this day. I’m blessed to say I developed & trained over 200 kids in a 4-year span. I love it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggle definitely was there. It still is there. From the complaints about gym space not being available, & having to train some clients in the Texas heat (I hated doing that to my kids). To gyms charging astronomical amounts for space, to gym facilities you using closing down abruptly, with no notice. The road definitely has had its bumps. You just learn how to manage the load, & get crafty on your decision-making. Never make decision out of desperation, you think through it. And that’s why we’ve made it this far today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m one of the premier basketball trainers in the DFW area. I’ve been training for 4 years now, and over that time, I just know I’ve grown as a trainer because I’ve been focused on perfecting my craft. At C4 NXT LVL, we pride ourself on getting results out of our clients. And I can say, with over 180 clients trained in a 4-year span, we’ve done exactly that.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I would say, you just have to get out there and network. Don’t be so shy to where you don’t talk to people. The saying goes, closed mouths don’t get fed. So, you have to speak up. You never know who could know somebody, that knows somebody. That could be your big break. I learned from my Pops on how to network. He taught me that you have to put yourself in front of people in order to be seen. And to this day, his exact words still have me evolving, because I took heed to what he said.
