Exploring Life & Business with Amy Tate of Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Collaborative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Tate.

Hi Amy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have supported women as a doula, birth assistant, lactation counselor, and midwife for over 20 years. I grew up in the birth world as my brothers and I were born at home. My Mom was a La Leche League Leader and taught childbirth education classes for a midwife in Austin in the early ’70s, and I just believed that everyone had babies at home. I began training as a midwife in 1990 after my first two sons were born at home. Shortly before finishing my clinical hours, my first husband passed away from mental illness, so I stepped away from midwifery and worked as a business manager. I seemed to always have one foot in the birth and wellness space, though.

After my mother passed away in 2010, I began to really question what I would regret if I was ill. I knew I had to go back to midwifery. And in 2018, I opened my own practice, then my former birth center. In late 2021, I accepted an unexpected buyout offer on that birth center. This was the catalyst for Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Collaborative, a small boutique midwifery practice that can tailor care to each family.

I have been married to my husband Jim for 23 years and have 4 sons. I am a long-time resident of Old East Dallas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
> There have absolutely been bumps in the road. Midwifery is all

> encompassing; there are so many amazing moments but also some hard and

> heavy ones. Supporting families emotionally,

> physically, and spiritually is so rewarding but can also be emotionally

> and mentally taxing. Finding balance continues to be a mission, but I

> feel like most of us say that.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Collaborative is my new boutique practice. My business partner and I have both been East Dallas residents for many years and this is close to our homes.

Our practice is a Collaborative. We have Midwives, a Chiropractor, Lactation Consultant, Maternal Health Coach, and Pelvic Floor Therapist who share space. My midwife partner and I are both Licensed in the state of Texas and Certified Professional Midwives. We strive to provide exceptional care in our offices and are experts in home or birth center settings! Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Collaborative offers a holistic and compassionate approach to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. We are traditionally trained with a collaborative philosophy.

What makes you happy?
I love spending time with my family. A day trip or short hike is a favorite.

I have always been passionate about supporting and mentoring women in finding personal

> strength. Even when I stepped away from midwifery, this has always been

> a focus.
