Meet Jimmy Tran of Code Ninjas Preston Hollow/Oak Lawn Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Tran.

Jimmy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Jimmy J. Tran and I’ve lived in Dallas for 20+ years. I first came to Dallas to attend SMU under the generous and prestigious Hunt Leadership Scholarship, which selects 20 students a year to receive a nearly full-tuition scholarship to attend SMU. I am currently a candidate for DISD School Board Trustee – District 2. As a father of 3 young kids with 2 in DISD schools, I know that education is critical to their success and to the success of Dallas as a whole. I am a product of neighborhood public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. I am also a first-generation college graduate, and I understand the challenges facing our students in DISD. I have always worked hard but have also been given plenty of opportunities. I want to ensure that we provide similar opportunities to all students in DISD.

Over the past 20+ years in Dallas and in District 2, I have been an active part of the local community. Between 2001-2003, I ran an after-school tutoring and mentoring program for elementary students at Geneva Heights Elementary. I’ve also served in many capacities within my kids’ schools, from Site-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Committee to Dad’s Club to volunteering as a coach for Destination Imagination or their sports teams at the YMCA. In 2019, I started a nonprofit foundation to support my kid’s school and currently serve as its Board Chair. Last, I was appointed to the Facilities Sub-Committee for the 2020 Bond, which will bring $3.5 billion dollars to 220+ campuses throughout DISD. I look forward to meeting and interacting with District 2 residents and believe engaged voters will elevate our schools and ultimately, our city.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I find that nothing worthwhile in life is easy, but I’ve worked hard my entire life and have been blessed with plenty of opportunities. I am running for public office because I want to make sure that we provide the same opportunities to all kids in our District. What is good for DISD is good for the City of Dallas as a whole!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Code Ninjas Preston Hollow/Oak Lawn Group LLC?
I own several small businesses in District 2. First, I own a computer coding / STEM business called Code Ninjas Preston Hollow. We help kids 4-14 years old learn to code in an engaging way. Second, I own a real estate investing business called Oak Lawn Group LLC.

My current endeavor, however, is to serve our city in an elected position as the School Board Trustee for Dallas ISD in District 2.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have 350+ people already on my endorsement list, many of these folks are mentors and people who I’ve looked up to for years. My advice is to be yourself and to put in the work. My supporters have seen my commitment and service to public education over 20+ years and know that I am pursuing this for no other reason than to provide a better opportunity for kids in DISD.
