Rising Stars: Meet Sharon Dior

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Dior.

Hi Sharon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started dancing in 6th grade soon after being introduced to the show “Dance Moms.” From there I looked up dance videos on YouTube to try to pick up as much as I could. In the 7th grade, I joined the school dance team and continued to do so until my Senior year. I was blessed to have gone to a school that provided great dance training and education. We attended training camps, had workshops, and occasionally travel to train and compete. I trained a lot with MUV Dance and Fitness through school and outside of school, alongside guest choreographers who’d come to teach occasionally. After high school, I decided to start dancing again after dropping it for a little bit and eventually found Elecktricity Dance Movement in summer of 2020. From there I started to train on a more consistent basis and attended dance conventions like Monsters and Kaos. Here I’ve worked a lot on my Hip-Hop elements, but before then I had been training mainly in Jazz, Modern, and Contemporary.

I’m grateful for how things worked out and all the training that was provided; alongside those, I was able to meet and share the experience with. There’s a lot of people to thank but everyone I’ve ever taken from, with, and even taught has added to my growth and experience in some way. Since then, different dance opportunities have presented themselves that have helped me get to where I’m at now in my dance career. Very grateful to say the least! 😀

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say it’s a smooth road once you stop taking it so seriously. I think the main struggles I had was not dancing for myself and constantly putting expectations on myself that weren’t necessary. For a while, I had a love/hate relationship with dance but once I got out of my own head a little bit and stopped taking it so seriously, I was able to align with what was meant for me. I think also learning to trust the process and being patient has helped overcome and avoid any struggles that come up occasionally.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you, I appreciate it!! Right now, I’ve been focused on dancing and photography. I recently started experimenting more with taking pictures as another creative platform for me to express and execute different ideas. I’ve been teaching dance as well as performing at local venues! I’d say I specialize in performing because anytime I dance, I feel this stage presence that allows me to dance more expressively and freely. Because of this, I like to provide more movement that creates the same feelings, to hopefully help and allow for others to get that same experience. I think it’s a great way to empower people in their confidence and sense of freedom. I also love being able to show others how I interpret and hear the music and then seeing their interpretations of it.

I’m honestly proud to just be here and being able to do what I love as frequently and as freely as I can.

I think what sets me apart from others is being able to bring that stage presence to the dance floor anywhere I go. I really try to curate pieces having that stage presence to them. I also like to utilize fashion by styling the outfits to be something you would wear on stage. I feel that intentional styling can really make a piece come to life in a way that it allows the dancer to feel and step into whatever character or situation the music is giving.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t get so caught up in how it is that you’re going to get to wherever you want to end up. Have an idea of what you want to do and do the things that will help get you there. Whatever it is, go out of your way and do them. Allow for things to go unplanned; it’ll only take you to where you are truly meant to be. Some things I wish I knew were: Try not to let the uncomfortableness of not knowing intimidate you.

Trust the process, everything is happening as it’s meant to.

Do it for yourself, don’t get caught up in what others are thinking about you; it’s a waste of time and energy!!! Instead, share the space and be inspired 😀
