Life & Work with Jacob Ruth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Ruth.

Hi Jacob, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story is all about treating everyone I meet kindly and about being at the right place at the right time! I have been a freelance creative doing photography, videography, and graphic design for bands & brands now for almost 5 years now. I went through countless internships to meet managers and learn how the music industry operates. I also helped my friends who were in bands by doing a lot of work for free.

It took many years of free work to finally get to a place where I felt confident to start taking paid projects/work for others! I am extremely thankful to still have a lot of those relationships and for the ones, I am going to meet!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been the easiest of times, but it has been worth it. As I said previously, I have done a lot of work for little to nothing because I genuinely love creating art. I love helping those around me create something they’re proud of. Sometimes that comes with little budgets or doing a project for a dinner.

There came a time when I started to say no to those types of projects, and I was scared that I wouldn’t get any work. The funny thing is, when I started saying yes to less free projects and more paid ones, I started to get more consistent work because of the time and care I was putting into my new work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Personally, I feel like I am most known for my photography work (even though most people would say I’m known for my TikTok page lol.)

I love film photography. It isn’t perfect and that’s why I love it. It taught me how to not be so particular all the time with my photos. From that, I learned to love photos in a way that more reflects a mundane, realistic version of life. Instagram and social media as a whole create this narrative that we have to be put together, but that’s not possible.

Life isn’t meant to be all the best the moments in one place – it’s a collection of good, bad, and boring!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was kind of a mix of everything! I liked to be around all friend groups. I would say I had a pretty normal childhood. I played almost every sport you can think of and played a lot of video games.

It wasn’t until college that I got into more art and creative spaces!
