Exploring Life & Business with Juliet Urushima of Bluet SUP – Paddleboard and Kayak Experiences

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliet Urushima.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Bluet Sup’s Owner and Visionary My name is Juliet, and I love to teach people how to paddleboard, also known as SUP. My goal is to ensure that you, too, have a rewarding paddle experience so that you may enjoy the sport as much as I do and be a part of the new paddler community here in Highland Village -Denton County.

13 years ago, I discovered Stand Up Paddleboarding shortly after my mother’s passing. As I grieved for my mom, I became in love with paddleboarding, and I found acceptance and hope and came to peace with my loss while paddling on the water. Water is widely believed to be a powerful healing medium for the mind, body, and spirit, and its therapeutic properties can benefit people physically and mentally.

In my pursuit of paddleboarding, I raced recreationally throughout the country, including Lake Tahoe, Michigan, Minnesota, and Texas. I fell in love with the sport and want to share my passion by teaching others.

At one time in my life, I was a voluptuous woman (250 + pounds), and I was scared to venture into anything new. I wish I had found SUP back then, as this sport is perfect for those willing to try something new when you feel that you can’t. With perseverance, SUP can motivate and connect you with your body, mental health, and fitness goals. We are here to help support all who want to try SUP. I want to encourage any man or woman to try Stand Up Paddleboarding. With perseverance, you CAN do it!

In addition to being an avid SUPer, I am CPR certified, I have attended several professional clinics with World Class Elite Stand Up Paddle Boarders: Candice Appleby, Anthony Vela, Chuck Patterson, Danny Ching, and Anabel Anderson.

Every year I train for the 21-mile cancer fundraising run, “Damn that Cancer,” to benefit The Flatwater Foundation. A genuinely wonderful organization provides FREE mental health therapy and support to cancer patients and their families. You can learn more about this fundraiser here. If you’d like to donate you can do so here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
You will not learn to be better, grow, and succeed without obstacles and challenges. The biggest obstacle is getting back up when getting knocked down! When life feels like you can’t no more and want to quit, you have look at the bigger picture and see what you need to learn from the challenge and keep moving forward. Picking the wrong program/products for your business: the time and finances that go into a program and realize this isn’t going to work. It’s hard to accept a poor decision. However, I always learn a valuable lesson.

We’ve been impressed with Bluet SUP – Paddleboard and Kayak Experiences, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I love teaching stand-up paddle boarding! I am known for helping those afraid of water overcome their fear and assisting curvy people in enjoying paddling. I used to be 257 pounds myself. I wish someone had told me that just because I am fuller, figured do not hide from outdoor activities. I am here to encourage all to try SUP. My boards will not break, you will get back on the board when you fall off, and you will have fun! Pssst. You don’t have to stand! You can sit, float, enjoy the sunshine and allow the water to heal your soul.

What sets us apart from others?

Our Customer Service, high-end equipment, & our hidden little gem location at Pilot Knoll Park, Argyle. We also have a great partnership with The Bartonville Store, which hosts our catering needs, such as our Full Moon event: A self-guided Paddle under the sunset, paddle to the point to watch the moonrise with a champagne toast. After you disembark, you will enjoy a fabulous meal from World Master Chef Michael Scott.

What am I most proud of?

My Bluet Team has worked with me. I love every one of them as my own, and watching them grow up and flourish over the past eight years has been so rewarding. I also had the privilege to train three young adults with the superpower of Autism. These three trained hard with me last summer (2022) as they went to the Special Olympics in Florida 2 out of 3 took Gold Medals, and one athlete caught covid and could not participate. (I know he would have done extremely well) As I could not go to Florida, watching the videos and seeing them take Gold was incredible!!!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
