Community Highlights: Meet Bridgette Ojo of The PhD Mommy and the Millennial Mommy Movement

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridgette Ojo.

Hi Bridgette, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
2022: I experienced a loss.

My entire world was shattered upside down because it was my first time losing someone close to me and so unexpectedly.

I was wandering aimlessly for months, struggling to regain a sense of purpose and meaning in my life.

I’ve always been great at uplifting others and being encouraging, but I struggled to do that with myself.

It was hard.

I decided to start writing about my pain and began to use the pain and darkness into fuel. I realized the darkness was meant to help guide me in my next journey of life.

I learned how to combine research and practice as a tool to overcome my fears and obstacles. I am a great researcher and I study human behavior in education, so I learned how to apply those same principles to helping others and overcoming their challenges as entrepreneurs and understanding their mind and how they can venture deep within and become successful entrepreneurs.

In academia: I created a network of moms like myself—moms who are in graduate school. There is a lack of support for graduate students, specifically student-parents, despite accounting for over 22% of the student population at colleges and universities.

I realized that many student parents endure similar obstacles as I do, so I wanted to create a community where they can receive tips, guidance, and most importantly, support.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a very challenging road.

I believe if things are smooth, you are not on the right path. The path of least resistance is something we as human being are designed to gravitate towards. This can be good in circumstances such as beating traffic; however, it’s not good when dealing with other life situations.

I struggled with self-discipline, doubt & consistency. Internally I had this negative voice in my head that prevented me from moving forward. I realized it was imaginary. It was not real; it was my own insecurities projecting onto me because I never battled with certain obstacles in my life.

I never studied business, nor did I want to be an entrepreneur or podcaster. The role embraced me, and I had no choice but to embrace it back. Little did I know that speaking and sharing my human experience would reveal many of my shortcomings.

I used to be afraid to post, let others know about the company I was building, avoided emails, calls because I was afraid of being vulnerable and exposed. I was afraid of sharing my story, sharing my pain, fears, doubt, and trauma. However, we all have our own stories; no one is immune to life’s unfortunate events. The sooner we know this, the better off we are.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The PhD Mommy and the Millennial Mommy Movement?
The PhD Mommy is a community for women who are currently pursuing or aspire to pursue a graduate degree. Whether it is a Master’s degree, PhD or professional degree, this community seeks to enhance the agency and autonomy of women and girls to be the best version of themselves every day.

There is no other community like it. We have a podcast called the PhD mommy’s Journey that is in the top 1%.

We are really dedicated and committed to helping millennial moms reach, achieve and execute their goals. We focus on helping moms learn the importance of setting goals and completing them. We are here to help them become better mothers, wives, and entrepreneurs. We believe that life is what you create it to be, not thrown at you. You have to be the driver of your vehicle; you have to steer yourself in the right direction. We are here to assist with that.

The Millennial Mommy Movement is a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the autonomy and agency of women and girls reaching their full potential. I believe it takes a village and support on both the child and the parent to create a more sustainable and prosperous family. The millennial mommy movement is a new generation of mothers who are financial educated, independent, and free.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes-

Stop buying unnecessary things.

Know the difference between an asset and liability.

Build generational wealth.

Always tell people you love them.

Don’t be mean to others.

Give yourself grace.
