Today we’d like to introduce you to George Barrera.
Hi George, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up without a Father during my entire childhood really confused me as a little boy, didn’t understand why someone so important in my life was absent; my mother did whatever it took to handle both roles, and I’m forever grateful and proud of my Queen for NEVER giving up on me. As I searched for the acceptance of a Father, a Father to pick me up when I fall, a father to teach me how to catch a baseball, a father to teach me how to be the greatest version of myself. A Father that will just tell me how proud he is of me. Well, my FATHER NEVER showed up. At the age of 13, I joined an organization (gang), thinking my true friends would take care of me and help me fill that void of a fatherless Childhood. Seeing all my so-called friends and family always laughing and having a great time felt really good, and It felt as if that void was finally being filled. At the age of 15, I was shot and brutally beaten by other rival gang members; things started getting really violent between several different rivalries, Fights, shootings, stabbings you name it. On Dec 27, 1993, two days after Christmas, on a cold Monday night, My cousin, myself, and 3 other gang members went to the Mall in Irving, Tx; after hours of walking the mall we all decided to go grab a bite to eat at the food court, as we all sit down I then realize a group of men walking by and one of them started mad dogging me, my cousin quickly got up and pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots towards these individuals. Two were hit and injured but lived; unfortunately, one bullet hit an innocent bystander on the right temple, and he was pronounced dead at the scene; he was protecting and holding his 2- and 4-year-old daughters and his wife. 😓🥺 my deepest condolences goes out to his family. Facing a Murder Charge at the age of 15 was not exactly what I had in mind, BUT GOD, on the other hand, had a PLAN of his own. Facing a 22-year determined Sentence in a Juvenile delinquency, judge decided that I was too young to go to prison, so she decided to give me a determined sentence, which it simply means I would have to come back to court at the age of 18 to determine my outcome, PRISON for 22 years OR FREEDOM. I was shitting bricks 🧱😳 imagine. EVERYONE wanted me to go to Prison, and I don’t blame them; we all deserve to be locked up for taking someone’s life. The State recommendation was for me to go to Prison; my psychiatrist also recommended for me to go to Prison; even my victim’s wife testified against me, and she also recommended for me to go to Prison. My lawyer leaned towards me and whispered, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? YOU DIDN’T GIVE ME ANYTHING TO WORK WITH!! As I sat in court waiting for my verdict, there was one person (another psychiatrist) that stood up and said WAIT, let’s give George an opportunity; we have a Building Trade Program he can take, and in this program, we will teach him how to read a measuring tape, how to read basic blueprints, how to build picnic tables, how to use and safely operate any power tools, we will also guarantee him a job when we release him. I Thank God and forever give him all the praise and ALL the Glory for his grace and Mercy. The judge decided to give me an opportunity, and I took the Trade, a TRADE that would forever change my life. In 1997 I took the building Trade Program that led up to where I am today. I now own and operate a successful business 25 years of experience, we specialize in home renovations and New Construction; I thank God every day for my journey, something I didn’t want to go thru at the moment, but NOW I understand why. We now hold a building trade program for anyone interested to learn how to build a house from ground up. Good is Good
