Today we’d like to introduce you to John Liddle.
Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I think of myself as a communicator and a performer. The performer part came naturally. I was always a ham growing up. The communicator part is something I’ve had to work on.
After starting in the Musical Theatre program at the University of North Texas, I decided to transition to Radio/TV/Film and work at the student radio station, KNTU. It was a great decision, and it grew my love for radio.
I started doing sports play-by-play in college and decided I wanted to try to make it a career.
I had the pleasure to be the voice of Southwestern Oklahoma State for eight years (2008-2016), then moved back to the Dallas area.
From there, my play-by-play opportunities started to take off with local universities, and I lucked into a job as a news anchor at 1080 KRLD.
My job at KRLD has taught me so much. My ability to communicate and do great interviews just keeps improving. I’ve grown to love telling stories of people who are inspiring and bring hope to others. That’s why I started the Where You’re Going Podcast, to help people know that where they are headed is so much more important than where they are right now.
I also have had the chance to sing a lot of national anthems for local sports teams like the Stars, Mavericks, Rangers, Wings, and Panther City Lacrosse. It’s a blast.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like God has blessed me richly along the way. I see His hand on my career and my life, even in the rough times.
I went through a divorce three years ago. I didn’t want the divorce. And God used it to increase my faith in what He’s doing in my life.
I had a choice. Would I let the circumstance completely stop my progress and make me bitter? Or would I choose to keep moving forward and believing the best for my future and my family’s future in the face of the trial?
I’ve tried to choose the latter.
And as I’ve gained hope through my relationship with God, I’ve tried to pass that hope on to others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I get to do a lot of fun things: read the news, broadcast sports, and sing.
It’s the singing that sets me apart. There’s something so empowering about having a mic in your hand and belting out the anthem in front of 10,000 people.
I try not to let it go to my head. But there’s no doubt that it’s a special feeling that can’t be matched by anything else I get to do.
But I try to let all my talents and passions feed the others. When I’m doing news, I talk sports. When I’m broadcasting a game, I try to do it with a spirit of positivity and call out the awesome things people are doing. When I’m doing my podcast, I interview guests I know from the sports and news community. It all works together into a career arch that is unique to me. And that’s what I’d tell people…be you. There’s only one you! So do you!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I’m measured in the amount of risk I take. When I take risks, it’s calculated.
The biggest risk I took in my career was moving away from a good-paying, full-time job in Oklahoma to come back to North Texas. I didn’t have a full-time job when I moved back with my family. I had a part-time job where I was making $10/hour for maybe 15 hours a week.
But I knew I had to take the chance and get back to DFW…because I was plenty good enough to do everything I wanted to do here… I just needed to BE HERE to get the chance. So, with the support of my wife, we moved back, and it was the best decision we ever made as a couple.
