Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Nesmith.
Hi Rachel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Howdy! I’m a Dallas singer/songwriter with autism as well as fibromyalgia, arthritis, depression as well as narcolepsy with cataplexy, a rare sleep disorder that’s very well misunderstood. I think that people with disabilities are superheroes because we have to push so much harder to get the same amount of goals done with the same amount of time our families are there to support us, but our we also affect their lives greatly, and I know the stress and health can be sometimes overwhelming being the parent of an awesome daughter with autism as well. I’m making the world a better place through my music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As an independent musician whom is very prolific and lyrics matter, it’s difficult to compete with Signed Musicians. Lyrics can change misconceptions and incorrect stereotypes. I am fighting stereotypes portraying narcolepsy as fairytale Nap Land, when in fact, it is anything but Inception meets Nightmare on Elm Street. I address important social justice issues with my original lyrics and have even produced some this year. I’ve worked hard since 2020 to become a now Verified on Spotify and the @mayk.it app, a free app that allows everyone to get their music worldwide. It’s been challenging and most rewarding, making a real difference in songs that matter.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I also go by SleepyAmerican, and I Live in the NapCave. A native Duncanville, TX girl and stanch narcolepsy and chronic illness advocate, I write my own lyrics and melodies. I am a breakout Maykit app Spotify and Maykit verified musical artist whom is making the world a better place one melody at a time. I do some producing and mixing as well. My passion is changing the status quo about disability and social justice. I do many genres and some cute sexy songs, too. However, my Primary Passion is my Legacy, Social Justice. The best way to bust harmful incorrect misconceptions and stereotypes is thru pop culture, changing the heats of the people. Together, we can elevate narcolepsy awareness to new heights. I love singing about Dallas, too! My songs include “Uptown Downtown All Around,” “Texas State Fair,” “Duncanville TX,” & ”Allen Premium Targets.”
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Yes! Apps I must have include Mayk.it, BandLab, Spotify for artists, Vista Create, Rap Fame, as well as iTunes for Artists. Without these apps, I wouldn’t be able to create being a small independent artist in a Microniche.
