Today we’d like to introduce you to Ke’Ara Roquemore.
Hi Ke’Ara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I originally started out in nursing school at my local college. I was about 4 credits away from graduating with my Associate’s of Science Degree when Covid hit. The classes that I was taking at the time were way too difficult to take online (which is what we transferred to due to the pandemic), so I dropped all of my classes in hopes of returning once everything calmed down. In the meantime, I became very frustrated with nail salons near me and thought I could probably do a better job at my nails than they can. I started out in my dinning room, and I practice every day on my craft. Although I had began doing nails, I figured it was only going to be a side hustle thing for me, and being a nurse was going to be my bread and butter. Unfortunately, once I returned back to college, I received the runaround about continuing my classes for nursing, so I took a chance on nails as being my new career choice knowing nothing about being an entrepreneur. I knew I had a passion for nails after I became so good at it quickly. It didn’t take me long to catch on at all. Learning the acrylic process was very difficult, but I was determined for success. Most people encouraged me to do nails full-time, but I also had some who made me feel as though I needed an actually degree with a career. I thank God for revealing to me my true passion. Nails fulfilled me more than nursing could ever do. In all, I never lost the overall objective I loved which was caring for people. Being a nail tech just showed my compassion in a different way. 3 years later, I can say that it’s nothing but God to be flourishing in the way that I am. I have been hand-picked for a nail magazine competition, won an award at a local network event, and now my story is being featured in a magazine. Being an entrepreneur is not for the weak, but if that’s what God has for you, it will work out for your good ALWAYS!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I faced quite a few obstacles. I went to nail school twice. The first time, I was facing life hardships and needed to step back for a moment. I was worn out from nails by overbooking myself and not creating the necessary boundaries I needed for running a business. That is when I tried to pursue nursing again but received the runaround. After working as a travel CNA, I got fired for not showing up to work due to life challenges. At this point, I thought my whole world was crashing down because I didn’t have a backup plan, but God did. I pursued nails again, and this time it took off for me. I made a booking site, accepted deposits, relocated, and began to build my brand. There’s been some slow months and some good months, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I was made for this. When something is for you, God will always bring it back around again.
