Thanks for sharing your story with us William. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like many of us, I worked long hours and traveled a lot. Eventually I ended up having 2 lower back surgeries. And needless to say, my wife and I decided I needed a new career path. Both my wife and sister have over 20 years combined in the massage industry convinced me to give massage a try. So I did and discovered how intriguing massage was and the amount of science that supported it.
After graduating in 2015, I ended up working at both sports chiropractic clinic and a spa establishment. You have to remember, that what I did before was help other businesses start up or expand. So when I started working and building my client base, I was paying attention to what really benefited the consumer as well as the staff. In essence, I was doing hands-on research and development. I found that clients were getting less hands-on therapy for the time they booked and more often than not, experience poor quality treatment. And the therapists, especially the great ones, don’t stick around because of poor work conditions and low commissions.
And so by January 2017, I opened Relax Myora Spa Lounge. Having happy clients is only half of our success. We ensure we compensate our therapists well and give them proper training, rest and safe work conditions. This ensures loyalty and better client and staff satisfaction. As soft tissue experts, we are constantly striving to improve and gain more knowledge in releasing muscular tension. I have also, earned my licensed as a Licensed Massage Instructor this past year. We are proud to say we just hit our 1 year anniversary this January and have had great responses from the community and look forward to helping even more people this year.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Mostly it’s been smooth. But there have been a few bumps. Now I’m Chinese by ethnicity but was born American through and through. When I first started looking for space I met this property agent who refused lease us space because I was Asian and was looking at opening a spa. In a few words, he assumed I was going to open a foot spa and or other form of shady business which of course wasn’t the case. Despite speaking perfect English, he wouldn’t even continue speaking with me and got in his car and left. Needless to say, I was shocked. Fortunately, we were still able to find a space and open.
